Yesterday I gave the closing keynote at the Biennial of the Americas’ 2026 Americas’ Leadership Luncheon in Denver. All morning, leaders from across the hemisphere talked about the work happening in their own communities. Then I got to talk about something I’ve believed my whole life. The relationships between nations aren’t built only in capitals. They’re built by governors. They’re built by mayors and cities. They’re built by businesses, by artists, by students, by families who know each other across a border.
When national diplomacy leaves room, Colorado can step forward. We’ve done it before, and we ought to do it again.

This young woman voted in Abilene, and the lines were long. It took about 45 minutes, and the poll workers tried to say she wasn't registered.
She made them check and check again; it turns out she was an active voter, and they "didn't have it updated.”
