An Arctic air mass swept south across North America recently, driving temperatures sharply lower and creating a deep cold across central and eastern regions.
Created by @mapsdotcom, this map is based on the GEOS-5 model from the @NASAEarth Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. GEOS-5 brings together millions of observations from satellites and ground sensors. Scientists use models like this for real-time weather forecasting, analyzing historical trends and understanding climate variability.

Spring has sprung. But sunlight and warmth aren't the only things on the horizon.
Ticks will be emerging, too.
The prevalence of ticks and the Lyme disease they can carry has increased substantially. As temperatures climb, ticks and people spend more time in common places.

Apparently there are more golf courses than McDonald's, which seemed surprising, so I had to map it. The difference mostly comes from the spread of golf courses outside cities.
More green = more golf. More yellow = more McDonald's.

Bundle up! 🥶 Much of the U.S. has been experiencing cold, wintry weather due to a large mass of Arctic air that moved south.
This map shows near-surface air temperatures at 7 a.m. EST on Jan. 15, 2024 from NASA’s GEOS model. go.nasa.gov/422l8dG

ALT Visualization of air temperature in Celsius in the contiguous U.S. at 2 meters. Much of the northern and central parts of the U.S. are dark blue, indicating temperatures are anywhere from -30 to 0 degrees Celsius. Below that is a band of white, indicating temperatures around 0 degrees Celsius. A strip of yellow and red along the southern part of the U.S. along the coast indicates that temperatures are anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees Celsius.
