On the new TMT, I’m joined by @markdavyd of @musicvenuetrust . Normally when I interview Mark, something terrible's happened in his sector, so nice to chat about positive news on the proposed levy on arena/stadium shows that will support grassroots venues, artists and promoters

Light at the end of the tunnel for Grassroots Music Venues. People who say it can’t be done should get out of the way of people doing it.

Tagging my MP @FloEshalomi - this month Labour will respond to the CMS Select Committee report published on how to face the crisis in the grassroots music sector. This budget’s rates decision has deepened the crisis for many - @lisanandy @RhonddaBryant action is now critical

Labour has committed itself to a creative ambition that high quality cultural experiences should be available to all. For grassroots live music, the budget sadly moves that aim further out of reach rather than nearer. We remain committed to working collaboratively to achieve it.

I’m pleased we have a Southend MP on the @CommonsCMS committee. I hope that @BayoAlaba is able to communicate the cliff edge the business rates situation has put hundreds of venues, at a time where the crisis was already acute.

The next year is the biggest threat to music venues, with the challenges that the new budget has presented!
Losing anywhere between 9%-43% of our fellow venues would be an absolute tragedy

Craziest housing stat of the week: The state spends MORE today on housing than it did in 1976.
The key difference: we used to build council houses, now we spend it on subsidising private landlords.
Our housing system is completely broken.

Everyone involved in the music industry and Parliament should read this. Data based decision making is vital.
"But Mark, aren't you just exaggerating this situation?"
A new Substack read for those of you who don't understand quite how challenging the budget is for grassroots music venues.

Over the next few days, please write to your local MP about the urgent need for action to stop the rise in Business Rates and prevent hundreds of grassroots music venues closing.
We’ve made an online resource at bit.ly/MVTgovernment to make this as easy as possible to do so.

👎 A significant reduction of business rates relief that will require grassroots venues to pay more tax at a time when many are struggling to stay afloat.
We'll be sharing more analysis soon - stay tuned!

Congratulations to the Music Venue Trust on an excellent Venues Day! I can’t believe it’s 10 years since the very first Venues Day! A lot has been achieved, but also a lot of work still to be done to make sure this crucial part of the music industry is protected #VenuesDay
