Congratulations to my PhD advisor Louis Brus on his well deserved Nobel Prize win for the discovery of QDs! A true scientist's scientist, 100% substance and 0% hype, always seeking out important new scientific questions. An inspiration to so many, and a genuinely kind person!

Building on this thread, Louis Brus has authored multiple papers over the years that stand out in my memory as moments that fundamentally shifted my mental picture of physical phenomena in materials. Some examples:
Replying to @KamatlabND @JChemPhys
Amazing papers! As a PhD student I recall my reading of both these papers as the “aha” moment when I finally understood - quantitatively - how a QD was different from a cluster/molecule. Gorgeous pedagogical development.
QUANTUM DOTS WIN THE NOBEL!! Particular congratulations to Louis Brus, who has been an inspirational mentor to me and so many others in the field.
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 #NobelPrize in Chemistry to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.”

Excited to have >20 students joining us for summer research in the chemistry department this year! We kicked things off yesterday with a quick break from lab work for coffee, pastries, and introductions:
This is so cool! Congrats to the team!
Check out our latest work in @Nature! We show that photon avalanching nanoparticles can be switched on and off repeatedly using light, which allows us to perform <1 Å accuracy super-resolution imaging and 3D nanopatterning. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Abstracts are due today! This is gearing up to be an incredible symposium; if you have some innovative way to teach pchem (lecture or lab) this would be a fantastic venue to share it!
There’s only 3 days left to get your abstract submitted for our PHYS symposium “Innovative Teaching in Physical Chemistry” so don’t delay! @lizz_thrall @gracestokes @markphendricks
I’ve said it before, but we live in the future. We’re watching nanocrystals grow on the atomic scale!
This atomic-scale movie upends a 100-year-old theory! Thanks to record-breaking 🔬 video resolution at our @molecularfoundry, scientists have discovered 🔎 how atomic-scale defects direct #nanoparticle growth. Check it out ⬇️

Great to see so many friends and colleagues—particularly all of the @NUChemistry folks! It was fun introducing the students to Chicago delicacies like deep dish and Chicago dogs.
.@WhitmanCollege Chemistry had a great time at #ACSChicago!
Congrats Kathryn—a well deserved award and fantastic talk. I’m lucky to work with such talented undergraduates!
For those of you early birds at #ACSChicago, I’m excited to speak about our efforts to automate metallic nanocrystal synthesis (and some interesting results!) tomorrow at 8am
