For one moment, surrounded by hundreds of people celebrating and saying goodbye, they found each other. Their relationship was complicated.

But so is love. And whatever came before this moment, and whatever came afterward, this moment was real.

Fifteen years together. The disappointments. The uncertainty. The fights. The victories. The children. The sacrifices. New York. Los Angeles. The years without work. And then this remarkable thing that happened to their family.

And I think that’s part of what I see when I look at their faces.

Then Mary Tyler Moore and the creators of her show took a chance on him, a dramatic actor in a comedic role. They fought for him when CBS had doubts. Thankfully, they won that fight.

My parents didn’t know exactly what was coming next. They knew they would be okay. My father had a career now. There would be other opportunities.

What strikes me about the photograph is how private the moment is, even though it is happening in an incredibly public place. For that instant, the crowd seems to disappear. They are just looking at each other.

The cast had cried. They had done the now-famous group hug. And when filming ended, it seemed as though the entire audience, mostly family and friends of the cast and crew, swarmed the stage. Everyone was hugging. Everyone was crying.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, someone captured this. My mother and father.

A lot of people have asked me about this photograph. My parents’ relationship was complicated. I don’t think there is any reason to pretend otherwise. But there is one thing I know was true: they loved each other.
