"Working better together means shifting power closer to affected communities and transforming systems so that every child can continue learning, even in times of crisis." Mr. Nelson Sifuna, Education Secretary, @EduMinKenya As the global conversation on Education in Emergencies comes to Africa for this landmark gathering, Mr. Nelson Sifuna, reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to ensuring that crises do not deny children their right to education. For him, transforming Education in Emergencies requires a fundamental shift in how decisions are made, how resources are distributed and who holds the power to shape solutions. Communities affected by crises must have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their lives. For international organisations and development partners, localisation must move beyond commitments and become a reality in programme design, financing, implementation and evaluation. Local knowledge, priorities and experiences must inform the decisions that shape education responses. Ultimately, progress must be measured by whether children can access safe learning environments, remain in school, receive the support they need and build meaningful futures. He called for partners to align around shared values, challenge established ways of working and embrace approaches that put learners first. @INEEtweets @uoneducation #WeAreUoN #DiscourseatUoN

"Education in Emergencies is a global concern that calls for collaboration, innovation and practical solutions to ensure learning continues even in times of crisis. At the University of Nairobi, the journey began in 2010 through partnerships and a donor-supported project initiated by Prof. Loice Gichuhi. Within a year, the programme was institutionalised, marking an important step towards strengthening expertise in Education in Emergencies. Today, the University offers Education in Emergencies at Master's level, with a focus on bridging academic learning and field practice. A key priority is extending this knowledge to the community level by equipping education managers, school principals and other grassroots actors with the skills to respond to emergencies. The programme's impact has also extended beyond Kenya, including training officers in Somalia between 2014 and 2016. As natural emergencies and complex crises continue to evolve, the call is clear, we must work, think and transform societies together. Through collective action and shared learning, we can contribute to shaping a global declaration that advances Education in Emergencies." Prof. Rosemary Imoje speaking during the Working Better Together: Shifting Power, Transforming Systems forum. @INEEtweets @uoneducation @EduMinKenya #WeAreUoN #DiscourseatUoN

The three day forum "Working Better Together: Shifting Power, Transforming Systems" hosted by @INEEtweets, @EduMinKenya and the University of Nairobi through @uoneducation has kicked off! Speaking during the forum, Dr. Faiza A. Hassan, Director, Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies, highlighted the urgency of protecting children’s futures, particularly as approximately 1.3 billion children face the overlapping impacts of climate change. Drawing on the spirit of Harambee, she reminded participants that meaningful progress cannot be achieved in isolation, but collaboration must go beyond bringing people to the same table. It requires shifting power by recognising the different forms of power we hold, and creating spaces where people engage as equals. The call is to move towards a model of true solidarity, one grounded in shared responsibility, equitable partnerships and collective action to build education systems that serve every child. #DiscourseatUoN #WeAreUoN #SiNiUoN

The "Working Better Together: Shifting Power, Transforming Systems" Forum was brought to life through engaging breakout sessions, where participants exchanged perspectives, mapped power dynamics and envisioned what an ideal Education in Emergencies (EiE) sector could look like in the future. Through collaborative exercises, delegations identified key actors, relationships and sources of influence shaping their respective contexts, before exploring practical levers for change. Discussions focused on who needs to be engaged, supported, challenged or nurtured to shift existing power dynamics and build more inclusive, locally led education systems. From envisioning the future to identifying actionable pathways, the sessions reinforced the importance of collective reflection, shared learning and collaboration in transforming EiE. @INEEtweets @EduMinKenya @uoneducation @AFOSCKENYA #WeAreUoN #DiscourseatUoN
