BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”

This has been a wonderful collaboration with @GoogleDeepMind to make new-to-nature #enzymes. Great work from the whole team.
Introducing AlphaProtein Novo, a pipeline for de novo enzyme design! In collaboration with @francesarnold's group, we developed AP Novo and used it to get SoTA "novel-scaffold" activity on 2 benchmark reactions and create enzymes to synthesize the pharmaceutical motif piperidine and degrade the environmental toxin DEHP.
Work led by @ZvxyWu @ZiqiLi0513 with teammates @alexechu_ @kelly_ruijie @schulluc @jacobjinkelly @rosaliags @davidla @solserpens @j_reisenbauer, @pengliu_group, Josh, Thomas, Amy, Tristan, Harshnira, and others. It was a joy and privilege to work with you all!

The 2026 #NobelPrize laureates in physiology or medicine have laid the foundation of a new era in neuroscience.
Using optogenetics, researchers have been able to reveal neural circuits governing specific memories, feelings, and behaviours relevant for neurological and psychiatric disorders. In clinical medicine, researchers are using the method in attempts to restore sight in people with visual impairment.
Optogenetics has fundamentally altered our understanding of the brain. Every day brings new discoveries, helping to solve one of humanity’s great mysteries: how our incredible brain works.

Another exciting milestone in biocatalysis with nonheme enzymes! We have developed the first enzymatic system for copper-catalyzed radical C(sp³)–N coupling: science.org/doi/full/10.1126…, which also represents the first demonstration of employing pterin-dependent nonheme enzymes in non-natural reactions. This work was led by postdoctoral fellow Dr. Xuzhong Shen (@lanser1208 ), in collaboration with Prof. Yi Rao’s group at Utah State University, Prof. Yunfang Yang at Zhejiang University of Technology, and Dr. Marc Garcia-Borràs @MarcGBQ from the University of Girona. Once again, this study highlights the power of combining metal substitution with nonheme enzyme biocatalysis to push the boundaries of biocatalytic transition metal catalysis.
