Hello! My PhD research @DICE_Kent takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the practice & outcomes of local stewardship of marine #Biodiversity. We use #CommunityBasedConservation of #SeaTurtles in #Tanzania as a case study 🐢🇹🇿🔎
#MarSocSci
6/6 Many thanks to my supervisors @AnotherBobSmith, @DrDavidLRoberts & @IainDarbyshire1
Thanks to @Darwin_Defra for funding the project
Thanks to the collaborative projects #TIPAsMozambique & #KBAsMozambique
Thanks @kewgardens for financial support for my PhD #DICECON22 #LandSea2
5/6 Our analysis suggests #OECMs should cover 26% of Maputaland, in addition to the 28% of existing protected areas. This is high but matches government plans to create jobs through ecotourism & sustainable use projects in this global biodiversity hotspot. #DICECON22 #LandSea2
4/6 For the High Management Intensity OECMs, we specified that areas of high agricultural suitability should be avoided where possible; for the Low Management Intensity OECMs,specified that areas of high ecotourism potential should be preferentially selected. #DICECON22 #LandSea2
3/6 We used CLUZ & #MarxanWithZones to identify potential locations for (a) High Management Intensity & (b) Low Management Intensity OECMs to meet conservation targets, maintain connectivity, minimise impacts on farming and increase ecotourism opportunities. #DICECON22 #LandSea2
1/6 @DICE_Kent we used SCP to identify where best to create
Other effective area-based conservation measures (#OECMs) are a conservation designation for sites that are achieving the effective in-situ conservation of biodiversity outside of protected areas. #DICECON22 #LandSea2

2/6 OECMs could be particularly relevant for places like Maputaland, a region in southern Africa with globally important biodiversity, great potential for ecotourism, high poverty levels and communally managed land. #DICECON22 #LandSea2

2/6 We asked what they think about reintroducing species from #beavers to #bears 🦫🐻. We found abundant support, particularly for the introduction of non-predator species like #redsquirrels 🐿 #LandSea1 #DICECON22

This involves (1) choosing a representative set of countries; (2) selecting sampling units within them to avoid over-representing large nations; (3) collating the best datasets for the countries; (4) calculating the sample's % conservation area coverage.

To inform debate & measure change we need accurate global coverage estimates. But some data only exist at the national scale, especially for community- and privately-managed conserved areas.
Our new sample-based framework helps overcome this problem.

4/6 #DICECON22 From 2005-2018, PAs in Kalimantan had on average 2.4 times less deforestation👏and 3.4 times greater alleviation of poverty👏compared with control areas outside PAs, however, overall wins for poverty did not mean wins for every dimension of poverty… #ConEffect

Estimating conservation area coverage from such a sample is quick & doesn't require reporting results at a national level, so new/sensitive datasets can easily be included.
We're currently analysing data collected using this approach so stay tuned!

Developing a framework to improve global estimates of conservation area coverage
A 100 nations have committed to conserve 30% of the planet by 2030. But this is very contentious: some groups criticise the target as too high; others call for 50% by 2050.

1/6 Hi 👋 as part of my PhD at @DICE_Kent I’ve been researching what British farmers think about #rewilding 🦫 We interviewed 95 farmers across Britain to understand how they perceive rewilding and what rewilding activities they support 🧑🌾 #LandSea1 #DICECON22

(1/6) 🏝️Island biodiversity is⬇️at an unprecedented rate due to habitat loss, over-exploitation, invasive species & climate change☀️. These human-induced threats have altered ecosystem processes, causing numerous species to go extinct. #DICECON22 #ConEffect

A big milestone for our @Darwin_Defra project: our final meeting with the Mozambique partners, organised and hosted by @uemmoz & @kuwukajda. There were great sessions on @izeleHQ and our systematic conservation planning in Maputaland. Stay tuned for our final outputs!
