Instead of cutting the welfare bill Labour is now: - Entering people's bank accounts with no court order to remove tiny amounts of cash. - Sending HMRC inspectors into homes to value them for the new 'mansion' tax. - Taxing people for watching YouTube. What is the point

Anyone drawing parallels with Norway off the back of this story should do so fully aware of the investment mandate of Norges (below). If UK wants to start now then it shouldn’t be buying green energy assets (which is this new fund’s mandate) but, probably, a global equity ETF, a global bond fund, and buyback some of that gold sold 25y ago….
NEW Britain’s missing sovereign wealth fund… Treasury officials have modelled that had the UK done what Norway did with North Sea revenues, there would be a £1 trillion fund… As Chancellor sets up Energy Wealth Fund, a look at the long historical argument about where the oil windfall went, including from interviews with those who have run Norways $2.4 trillion fund, now the biggest in the world, filled from the proceeds of the same North Sea. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm4g…

The document claimed a Leave vote would plunge the UK into immediate recession and cause 500,000 job losses. Which didn't happen?

The sanctity of contracts in England played a huge role in its pre-eminence and helped underpin a high-trust society. Eroding that principle will lead people to retreat to dealing with only those they know and trust, where agreements can be enforced through informal sanctions.
So basically, you can accept any rent a landlord asks for and then retrospectively claim you were desperate, and a tribunal will change your rent because some properties that aren't the same size or even in the same building are being advertised at a lower price.

This is a job for Andy Burnham’s National Centre for Information Defence.
The battle of narratives is going strong. Our countries are a recurring target. It is time to act to tell the stories that make us strong. Let’s live our own story! Protect what matters - our democracy.

Thanks to insane minimum wage hikes Britain's nominal wage gap is now smaller than the Soviet Union's.
In the last month, the Tories have admitted they’d both freeze the minimum wage for five years and raise taxes by stealth on the lowest-paid. That's not just out of touch; it's immoral. My letter to Kensington Kemi 👇

Tory Conference reaction from Conservative Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough @paulbristow79 -Kemi "got us back on the front foot," now need to "start talking to the country." -Budget will be "seminal moment" and clear economic choice. -Soft Reform voters are ex-Tories and need to be shown that Tories are serious and have "done the maths." -Tories shouldn't be too happy: "We need a serious alternative... we've got a lot of work to do... it was a positive conference but we shouldn't be triumphalist... we're there or thereabouts where we were at the last GE, we're not moving forward in the polls in the way that I feel we now can... we've got a lot of people we need to talk to." -Advice: "After the Budget let's go on an election footing campaign... explain why this Budget is wrong... we have to make the case for capitalism, free markets, for choice." -Kemi Show: "It's her party, people recognise that." -Campaign footing: "Because we've sorted ourselves out internally... that's not job done, now we need to go out and do that to the rest of the country."

University students learn practical lesson in price controls.
The French government recently decreed that university cafeterias would have to charge only 1€/meal and, in a shocking turn of events, now students are being turned back after waiting in line because of shortages.

Bumper interview with @TiceRichard on @GuidoFawkes Live, reveals: -Reforms thinks this is "no time" to be discussing electoral reform, would instead pursue family & postal voting. -On that note country needs a "proper Reform majority." -Le Pen will win "big time" in France. -Reform govt would take the French "to the international tribunals" over current activity in the Channel as well as doing unilateral "rescue and return" of small boat migrants. -Party opposes national care service but is "looking at" care funding reform. -Would make no changes to triple lock. -Reform "will be coming out with a series of reforms to the MoD" and defence procurement. -He "had to take the mickey" out of GB News' infamously left-wing pol ed @christopherhope

In 1997 the Tories bequeathed New Labour: - 3.5% GDP growth - 4.5% wage growth - 4.6% manufacturing output growth - Energy independence and falling energy prices - A brand new nuclear power station (1995) - New reservoirs (1992) - Construction of Manchester airport's second runway - Falling unemployment - London as the world’s leading foreign-exchange centre - A newly opened Channel Tunnel - Debt at just 37% of GDP - On track for a balanced budget Andy Burnham just said that this was failure. Somehow.

The year is 2250. Heathrow's third runway has been approved for the 100th time, to great cheer. Help-to-buy is re-launching, just ahead of the year's annual Emergency Money Statement. The AIs watch silently, content that we've built our own matrix bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Always interested to see where the eve of Labour conference pressure comes from. The drumbeat this year: don’t expand Heathrow, don’t reform immigration, don’t do business with tech firms, do rejoin the EU. Quite Lib Dem, actually.
