Correct. The whole point of modern residential architecture was/is to make safe, pleasant houses available to regular people by mass-manufacturing them, and people like it.

I think that rationally ignorant, time constrained normie homebuyers see contemporary architecture/design and (mostly correctly) understand it to be a shorthand for, "great, it'll have all the usual modern amenities, no major safety or maintenance issues, etc."

I remember walking around Walter Gropius' original development from 1925 (!) and being struck by how spacious and well-built everything felt compared to the 1980s mock-georgian house where I lived. It's good architecture!

Moby-Dick is good but Capital by Christopher Nolan would be the greatest film ever made

Who’s gonna do Moby-Dick though. That one needs the blockbuster auteur treatment.

honestly this might be the last year of HTML Day unless we can find sustainable funding HTML Day belongs to the community and I'd love to see it continue but organizing it takes a lot of <time> if you'd like to help support it we would love to talk

I do think one of the beautiful things about classical music is that there is really no skill ceiling. Every violinist in the world has been playing the sonatas & partitas for 150 years but there's still room for discovery

It always blows my mind that the German architect Walter Gropius who co-designed the (then) PanAm Building in New York was born in 1883. He was 20 when the Wright brothers did their first flight, 25 when Model T was first produced... And somehow drew this.

I live right next to the US embassy in London. They built an actual moat around it. Who builds a moat around their embassy? Countries that do bad things and expect retaliation. Or countries who do diplomacy as if we’re in the Middle Ages.

Kind of underrated element of how things are now is that all these science magazines that used to appeal to a general audience out of just being *interesting* now seem to force themselves to be *useful*. Much non-fiction writing bends this way too — it has to be pragmatic.
