One month ago, I sat down with President Lula to discuss how government serving poor and working people. Weeks later, Brazil took a historic step: a 40-hour workweek, at least two days off and no cuts to pay for more than 30 million workers.
Workers fought for decades to win the five-day workweek in America. Brazilian workers have fought for this victory, too. I congratulate them on this achievement.
Working people deserve time to live, not just work. Building a better future means giving people more of their lives back. And we’ll keep fighting for it.

Bora Lula! If and only if the Brazilian economy is going to work for the majority of its people. It’s not easy (yes there are massive hurdles) but there is only one candidate interested.
Public control is gaining traction in Andy Burnham’s government. But what does it mean?
In a new piece with @AnnaHopeEmerson we set out a clear definition. Public control is the capacity of the state to steer the strategic direction of economic activity through the public-purpose orientation of its policy tools. Ownership is one tool, not the only one. Link below.

What is the quantity and quality of funding that cultural institutions need to create lasting public value?
Yesterday at @vam_east Storehouse, our @IIPP_UCL Public Value of Arts and Culture working group brought together museums, galleries, funders and policymakers to explore how policy and value frameworks can reshape funding, governance, accountability and reinvestment. Central to my work as Economist-in-Residence at @_TheWhitechapel: putting culture at the heart of economic policy. Thank you to Gus Casely-Hayford for hosting.

To tackle our biggest challenges we need institutions designed to deliver on purpose. Conditions on public money, rewards shared alongside risks, and accountability for the direction we choose together.

We can’t do ‘good’ in the economy with an economic theory that only tells us how to fix markets if and when they fail. The common good is an objective, not a correction, where the how matters as much as the what. Telos and Polis!

Massive congrats to my friend @IsabellaMWeber for her excellent new book out in the UK this week. We need it today more than ever. As many of us have been arguing, a different economy is possible—-but it must be fought for. Also great review in the @guardian today: theguardian.com/business/202…

'Government officials can become convinced (or ‘captured’) by stories about wealth creation, as was recently evidenced by the US government’s approval of a leukemia drug treatment at half a million dollars'
@MazzucatoM
Economist @MazzucatoM: "If bankers, estate agents and bookmakers claim to create value rather than extract it, mainstream economics offers no basis on which to challenge them, even though the public might view their claims with scepticism. Who can deny Lloyd Blankfein when he declares that Goldman Sachs employees are among the most productive in the world? Or when pharmaceutical companies argue that the exorbitantly high price of one of their drugs is due to the value it produces? Government officials can become convinced (or ‘captured’) by stories about wealth creation, as was recently evidenced by the US government’s approval of a leukemia drug treatment at half a million dollars, precisely using the ‘ value- based pricing’ model pitched by the industry – even when the taxpayer contributed $200 million dollars towards its discovery."
