5 years ago, everyone and his grandmother did a RISC-V core for a FPGA. Today I have the impression it is fashionable that everyone and his grandmother design a Vulcan compatible GPU for FPGA. I am very fine with that. It might push forward openXC7, the open source Xilinx tools

I made my own RAM! And it almost works! If you think regular RAM is expensive, try PDP-11 memory. It's like $1000 per megabyte if you can find it. So, I set out to make my own. With ChatGPT in hand, we got busy in the EasyEDA designer. I've done PCBs before, but nothing this complicated. We got the schematic done, the PCB laid out, routed, and the Bill of Materials ready for production. With the FPGA code saved away, I ordered 5 of the boards to test. I’ve never flashed an FPGA before, so I bought an FT232H and wired it up.  I installed openFPGALoader and after a few false starts over compressed bitstreams, I managed to get it flashed.  All new territory for me! After a bunch of bench testing, I ultimately put it in a backplane with an M8190.  And the good news is it shows up as both 4M of RAM and reserved space for the ROM.  The bad news is that access to any ODD memory location fails.  So I’ve got something that amazingly almost works end to end, but has a really fundamental problem. So at this point, my RAM works, but only half as well as it should. I'll keep you up to date!

It’s alive, the smallest ever arduino compatible board works. 10x10mm Flashes over usb and everything. Only had time to test flashing and leds for now. More info at teapawt.org/pkuhar/status/21112660… firefly.inteliwear.xyz
Ok fine people of the internet. Here is my fully vibe coded, vibeeda-ed "product". The smallest Arduino compatible board ever made. For art projects and such. Only 10x10mm envelope!!!! - usb-c for programming - 5 GPIO - 2 RGB Led - 1 touch pad - 64kb flash, 20kb ram - risc-v core

My circuit for Fructus VGA output is designed to support many formats including Teletext. The rendered data just has to fit in the 32k frame buffer I have available on the ICE40. Luckily the Teefax project is still producing pages for this retro medium.

There is something cool about building your FPGA for your iCE40, using @CircuitPython to program it via IcePython, and then watching your design just work. 😎

Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. The air around you is full of tiny molecules, and at room temperature most of them move faster than the speed of sound. They do not all move at the same speed. A few are slow, most cluster around a typical speed, and a rare few are extremely fast. In 1860, James Clerk Maxwell worked out how these speeds are distributed. Ludwig Boltzmann later extended the idea. Here 1,200 beads play the molecules. The faster a bead flies out, the farther it lands, so each slot collects beads of similar speed. Together, the piles trace the Maxwell–Boltzmann curve.

One of the nice things about the FORGIX is that it is small and very portable, which means it can be used anywhere. This project uses the web cam on a laptop and the FPGA to implement a Sobel filter on the image. It is a great example to show how we can create image processing filters. hackster.io/adam-taylor/fpga…
