The @spectator consistently transcends at Easter. It is the only secular magazine which ‘does God’ for Holy Week better than many Christian publications. It beats with the spiritual rhythm of the Church calendar, and is all the more politically and culturally edifying for that.

Wondering if the hearts of those frustrated by small acts of petty symbolism, by the feeling that smashed windows and graffiti on bakeries are simply not enough, are cheered by the upgrade to burning ambulances this morning.

This is terrifying. Clergy here know the Rabbi at Bevis Marks which, as the only non-Christian place of worship in the City of London, is a remarkable and beautiful place. Prayers this evening for our Jewish friends.
This focuses the mind: Iranian agents Charged With Spying and Planning Attack on Bevis Marks, Britain's Oldest Synagogue where my parents were married.... along with other targets that are essential parts of British Jewish life.
Terrifying. We can only thank the British secret agencies, MI5 and M16 and anti-terrorism Police, for their wonderful work

I told him that my father was Jewish, spoke of the impressive war record of my Jewish grandfather, of the number of Jewish men in all of the allied armies, but he was indifferent.
Did he, I asked, want to clarify or rethink? “No thank you, I think I’ve made myself clear. Goodbye.”

When Marlowe’s British Kitchen opened in Leeds, Rabbi Gilbert asked the Muslim owners, Jenade Yamin and Arabaab “Paddy” Munir if they would consider making it kosher as well as halal. They did not have to. It meant change and cost. Paddy thought about it and said yes.
Now there are halal and kosher fryers side by side and one long queue for fish and chips. Orthodox Jews, Muslim families, neighbours from every background, ordering the same national dish.
Everyone remained unmistakably themselves, they simply widened the table and in that small act, you glimpse the country we can still choose to be.

When talking about the uprising in Iran it is important to clearly differentiate between the Islam of millions of Muslims leading a life of service and contributing to their communities, and the appalling Islamo-fascist regime in Iran of radical fundamentalists. #IranRevolution
