After more than a year of preparation, we finally met for the Value Connection workshop @_knaw in Amsterdam. It's wonderful when an idea turns into reality, and people connect. Excited for the future of the Value Connection, and the ideas that we discussed re alignment problem!
Every now and then I can get together and discuss super complicated things in a super serious way with geeks of different persuasions. And it is glorious. Thanks @broudsov for the visual and @michaelklenk for organising.

Jessica Pepp, Rachel Sterken, Matt McKeever, Eliot Michaelson: AI lacks intention. Can we call some manipulative? Yes, on 3 counts. When they produce devious output because it works. When we want to point out a moral issue, or the function of M is served. bit.ly/3cGeZ1i

My own chapter: Technology lacks intention. Can we be manipulated by it? Yes, because being manipulated can be independent from a manipulator. Your belief/action X is manipulated if X is explained by an injustice. Parallel with adaptive preferences. bit.ly/3e9bdOn

Philosophy may fail to give us the answer to its questions but "it keeps alive our sense of wonder by showing familiar things in an unfamiliar aspect" (Russell, Problems of Philosophy, quoted in Nathan Ballantyne, Knowing our Limits)
