This from @jk_rowling comes closer than anything else I've read to capturing why, as the Jason Arday story was unfolding over the past few weeks, I was terrified for him. It's not that I thought the criticism of him was unwarranted - that isn't what this is about. Rather it's that I wished there were some way we could collectively recognize when the harsh light of unwelcome stardom is likely to be too much for someone it has fallen on, and somehow back away from it a bit to give them space to breathe - space to go on living.
Part of my fear is that he seems to have been a fabulist, and, as Rowling points out, fabulists are almost definitionally more sensitive than most to how they are seen. But there is another aspect to this that I unfortunately know a lot about, which is that I don't think people appreciate how difficult it is when powerful institutions come after you - and X very much is an institution - even when you believe you are wholly in the right, and probably more so when you do not.
I admit I am particularly sensitive to this because it is exactly what happened to my father. For those of you who don't know, he was an intramural scientist at the NIH and uncovered someone in his lab fabricating data. When the NIH investigated, the fraudster didn't show up, and the powerful section head who had hired him decided to shift the blame to my father. Believing that he couldn't fight the institution, and convinced that they were going to take away his career and life, he killed himself.
I also know a little bit about what it's like to be at the center of uncontrollable firestorms that seemed like they might - and in one case actually did - unravel my life. I don't know why their effect on me was different - probably because both my father and Arday seemed to deeply respect the institutions that came after them, whereas I did not. But I definitely felt a little bit of the despair that ultimately consumed them, and so I understand how potent it is.
What does this mean? I don't really know. I'm not interested in trying to hang Arday's or my father's death on anyone. I don't think we should try to implement rules about who's allowed to criticize who when. And I don't think people should escape scrutiny for their actions because they might kill themselves if they do.
I do hope, however, that people learn something from this. Maybe it would help if we all remembered that we are all fragile in our own ways, and that it's rarely clear to strangers how. And maybe those of us who believe that even people whose actions we disdain don't deserve to be driven to suicide for them can modulate our actions accordingly.

Fabulists are always psychologically vulnerable or they wouldn't be fabulists. I've known a couple personally (both white women, one of them very young) and both, beneath a veneer of apparent narcissism, were damaged people who clearly felt they weren't and never would be good enough if the fabrications were stripped away.
Journalist Johann Hari survived plagiarism charges. Belle Gibson, of the fake brain tumour, the best-selling cookbook and the deal with Apple, is still alive and well. On the other hand, Brenda Leyland (another fabulist) killed herself rather than deal with the aftermath of exposure as an obsessive online persecutor of the McCann family.
If it's true Arday's stories about himself weren't challenged because Cambridge was excited to appoint a charismatic young black man, it's equally true that his blackness meant he became a lightning rod for discourse around DEI, and I don't doubt the weight of shame, and mockery and condemnation, even if a lot of it fell on Cambridge rather than Arday personally, seemed unsurvivable to him. He and Leyland both became unwilling, living symbols of something bigger than themselves: DEI taken to a ludicrous extreme and vicious online trolling.
I have some personal experience of becoming a dehumanised online punchbag. It takes a lot of psychological strength not to go under and when I heard that Arday was dead I felt utterly miserable.
I don't disagree that he'd never have found himself exposed in such a public way if he'd been challenged, kindly and privately, before he was given a highly-publicised professorship at what is supposed to be one of the world's best universities. However, saying that his promoters 'don't give a toss about him' seems extreme.

Earthset.
The Artemis II crew captured this view of an Earthset on April 6, 2026, as they flew around the Moon. The image is reminiscent of the iconic Earthrise image taken by astronaut Bill Anders 58 years earlier as the Apollo 8 crew flew around the Moon.

ALT Earthset captured through the Orion spacecraft window at 6:41 p.m. EDT, April 6, 2026, during the Artemis II crew’s flyby of the Moon. A muted blue Earth with bright white clouds sets behind the cratered lunar surface. The dark portion of Earth is experiencing nighttime. On Earth’s day side, swirling clouds are visible over the Australia and Oceania region.
In the foreground, Ohm crater has terraced edges and a flat floor interrupted by central peaks. Central peaks form in complex craters when the lunar surface, liquefied on impact, splashes upwards during the crater’s formation. Credit: NASA

One of the core missions of the Nobel Foundation is to safeguard the dignity of the Nobel Prizes and their administration. The Foundation upholds Alfred Nobel’s will and its stipulations. It states that the prizes shall be awarded to those who "have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind," and it specifies who has the right to award each respective prize. The truth is that the scientific process is horribly inefficient and wasteful. But the solution is NOT cutting funds and it’s NOT top down guidance of what should be studied. Instead, we should revolutionize how we publish and improve peer review.
