CBAM is an essential complement to the EU Emissions Trading System, helping prevent carbon leakage and safeguard the competitiveness of European industry. With its definitive phase underway since January 2026, getting implementation right is crucial. For companies, this means proportionate rules, workable procedures and minimal administrative burden. We gathered feedback from our members on practical challenges during the first months of implementation and where improvements are needed. Unfair trade practices evolve fast. Europe’s trade defence toolbox must keep pace. From complex value chain distortions to increasingly sophisticated ways of bypassing duties, the challenges are growing. A more proactive approach is needed. Our new paper sets out proposals for a more effective EU response: ▪️ Earlier investigations and anticipatory monitoring of market distortions. ▪️ Stronger enforcement against circumvention of duties. ▪️ Simpler procedures and dedicated support for SMEs. ▪️ More robust use of the particular market situation and facts available. 🤝 Good exchange today with MEP Christophe Grudler, ITRE Rapporteur on the #IndustrialAcceleratorAct. For BusinessEurope, the Act should strengthen Europe's industrial base through: ✅ Simpler and faster permitting across all sectors ✅ A targeted and cautious approach to European preference ✅ Avoiding a second, parallel EU system for FDI screening Read our position paper: shorturl.at/TMvS7

A valuable discussion with General Seán Clancy, Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, on Europe's preparedness and resilience. As General Clancy stressed: "Our resilience depends on our society - it is our own responsibility." We fully share the view that Europe's security depends on its competitiveness, industrial strength and innovation. Thank you for the excellent exchange - we look forward to continuing our cooperation.
Security & competitiveness go hand in hand! Today, the Chair of the EU Military Committee (CEUMC) joined @BusinessEurope to discuss Europe’s evolving security landscape. The message was clear: security, resilience, and economic strength are inseparable. With war in Ukraine, hybrid threats, and global competition, Europe must act now. Defence readiness isn’t just about militaries—it’s about industry, infrastructure, and innovation. The EU’s Preparedness Union Strategy and Defence Readiness 2030 are key to ensuring Europe can deter, defend, and sustain itself in crises. Businesses play a vital role—from critical infrastructure to supply chain resilience. Public-private cooperation is no longer optional—it’s essential. Europe’s future security depends on speed, scale, and solidarity. Let’s build a stronger, more competitive, and resilient Europe—together. 🇪🇺 #Security #Defence #EUResilience #BusinessEurope

New momentum for EU-Mexico trade! This morning we discussed the modernised EU-Mexico agreement with policymakers, business leaders & experts, and what it means for European companies and trade diversification. “As businesses, we need to be ready to seize the opportunities that this agreement will create,” highlighted our DG Markus J. Beyrer. The agreement goes far beyond its predecessor, strengthening cooperation across economic, political, social and strategic areas, and opening new opportunities for businesses on both sides. With the European Parliament plenary vote scheduled for early July, the process is moving ahead at speed. Many thanks to all speakers and participants for the excellent discussion!

EU enlargement is back at the top of the political agenda. But making it a success requires preparation on both sides. Speaking at the @iv_industrie Focus Group on Central and Eastern Europe, our DG Markus J. Beyrer underlined that candidate countries must be ready to take on the full obligations of EU membership, while the EU itself must be prepared to integrate new members. A merit-based accession process is essential to maintain credibility. And as candidate countries move closer to the Single Market, Europe's businesses must have a seat at the table.

Ahead of today's European Council (#EUCO), we urge EU leaders to act decisively and in unity to put Europe’s economy back on track. Delivering on European competitiveness and regulatory burden reduction must remain a key priority for Europe. A strong economy is the foundation for prosperity, security and resilience, and is essential to sustain Europe’s support for Ukraine. Our new Spring Economic Outlook shows that geopolitical tensions, high energy prices and global trade uncertainty continue to weigh on growth prospects.
