One of my favorite things about Ken Russell was that he was next level petty: Paddy Chayefsky had it in his contract that Russell couldn’t change a *single world* of Chayefsky’s verbose Altered States screenplay, so Russell got revenge by having the actors say every single word in the script, but in ways that made it sound ridiculous (rapid fire delivery, actors talking over each other, sometimes while eating) to the point that Chayefsky demanded they take his name off the film youtu.be/aLYWDYxuKSY
somehow I wanna be fair with this as a fellow government employee hahahahaha. there are limitations to where can an agency construct an infrastructure and we have known its cost in recent scandals
^ this is definitely easier -- and cost efficient -- than constructing endless number of cinematheque in far flung areas (where it means hiring employees under government plantilla, etc).

GOATed answer. He's not pretending that there's no answer to the film, that it was made to capture a then-present confusion that they themselves could not grasp well but felt the need to do anyway.
when I was a child, I was curious too about names I only heard of when I started exploring shit.
I have heard Cassavetes several times in my early cinephilia but have only got into him during the pandemic. When that opening of Shadows played, I gave up: he's one of the GOATs.
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?
I figured if I've decided to ever waste precious time and resources just to stubbornly make a feature, it's got to be something close to The Killing of a Chinese Bookie or Johnnie To's Life Without Principle (another one of the GOATs).
