1/ With the #Brisbane2032 Olympics fast approaching, Brisbane has a rare opportunity to define itself. In global terms, Brisbane is still somewhat of a blank canvas. This thread is my (slightly utopian) pin-up board of what we should be promoting & building over the next decade.

Singapore's PM on Singapore's high cost of living. "...you cannot ask for high income and low prices."

Singapore PM why his government doesn't cap prices to reduce cost of living pressures. What western leader today could explain the value of price signals in such a way?

Differentiated company tax rates based on business size/revenue are a ridiculous notion. Australia should encourage small and medium businesses to scale and become big businesses; not make growth less attractive. What message are we sending?

With the @AFL Grand Final this weekend, I’ve been building out a deeper look at the commercial business behind the league. One number that stood out: the AFL generated 27.8 regular-season attendances for every 100 Australians in 2026, higher than any of the 11 major leagues in this comparison. That doesn’t mean the AFL is bigger than the Premier League, NFL or MLB. It shows how deeply the competition penetrates its home market. Pair that with an average crowd of 37,551 and significant unused capacity across the league’s existing venues, and the commercial potential becomes really interesting. I’m digging into attendance, memberships, sponsorship, social reach, club revenue and where the AFL’s next layer of growth could come from. Interested in reading the report when it’s ready? Let me know!

The NRL and the AFL have the 13th and 14th largest annual TV rights revenues of all sports leagues in the world.

1/ What a waste. The RNA Showgrounds should've been Brisbane's Olympic Stadium. For more than a century it's showcased the very best of Queensland, from the Ekka to cricket and rugby Tests. Don Bradman even made his Test debut there. What an opportunity we've squandered.
As Queenslanders mark 150 years of the Ekka 7NEWS can show you its future. The first pictures of the $300 million RNA revamp have been released, with work starting as soon as this year's show comes to a close.

2/ We could've had an Olympic Stadium built around the RNA's heritage pavilions, like the SCG. Instead, spectators will get off at Exhibition Station and walk 15 minutes through a park to a stadium with far less surrounding amenity. Madness.

3/ So we're spending ~$300m on a venue that isn't our Olympic Stadium & is unlikely to become a regular home for tier one sports/entertainment content. If it wasn't going to host the Olympics, it should've been redeveloped as a boutique rectangular stadium. Instead we got neither

The $180,000 threshold from 2008 & remained fixed until 2024, when the revised Stage 3 tax cuts increased the top bracket to $190,000. If adjusted for inflation, Australia’s top marginal tax bracket threshold should currently be $280,000!!!

Right on cue. Australia’s new CGT regime is already changing investor behaviour. The Japanification of Australia has begun. Capital is flowing out of productive growth assets and into high dividend and fixed income ETFs as investors optimise for tax instead of growth. That’s such a bad outcome for productivity, innovation and long term economic growth. theaustralian.com.au/wealth/…

1/ Some food for thought, Aussie rugby fans: Excluding tests, & in the absence of a genuine 3rd tier, Australia's professional player group will feature in just 16–19 matches next year in 2027. For comparison: 🇿🇦: 29-38 🇳🇿: 26-32 🇫🇷: 30-37 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: 22-28 🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿: 22-29

UPDATE: I did forget to account for Super Rugby AU. Last year it only added 3 extra fixtures (4 with the GF), so it didn’t materially change the picture. However, if the rumours are true, expansion to include Fiji, Tonga and Samoa would be a very welcome step forward.

3/ We literally have a situation where Marcus Smith, 27, has appeared almost as many times for the Harlequins (183) as James Slipper, 37, has appeared in Super Rugby (212). For context, James Slipper is the most capped Super Rubgy player of all time....

4/ The imperative is simple: We must expose our players to more fixtures. That means establishing a genuine third-tier competition. Greater selection continuity and stronger reliance on Super Rugby-established combinations would help, but more games are the structural solution.
