Made my @Curbed debut today talking to NYC’s indie theaters as they prepare to reopen after an almost year-long shut down. Plus an update on @AlamoNYC’s Lower Manhattan location curbed.com/2021/03/new-york-…

Netflix has spent the last 10 years trying to render movie theaters obsolete. i wrote about why they failed, why they gave up, and why abandoning their holy war on exhibition could save the struggling company from becoming obsolete itself. indiewire.com/features/comme…

Another NYC theater closing its doors with lots of rumors about more to come in the months ahead.
I'm told that tomorrow is the last day of movies at Cinema 1,2,3 on the East Side. This used to be Manhattan's most prestigious cinema and a place where I spent a lot of my youth. Why was it not landmarked?

At the Kips Bay AMC public hearing at Manhattan CB6 and I must say it sure sounds like NYU Langone Health deliberately concealed its plans from the community

Advertisers pay big money to AMC and other exhibitors for pre-show ad campaigns (whether directly or indirectly through NCM). There’s an almost 0% chance they’d pass on that revenue to instead spend $$ on a licensing fee for Looney Tunes shorts. Sucks but it’s the sad reality
the looney tunes shorts were originally run as theatrical shorts (back before antitrust regulation killed features being sold with shorts) and i feel like they should start throwing them in with movies when you see them in the theater. like they should license them to AMC

Will miss you, Kev
I didn’t know he passed. He was always my favorite part of going to see a movie at Lincoln Square.

The Kips Bay theater was the #7 highest grossing theater in the NYC metro DMA last year. Also, interesting to note that it was the 10th highest grossing theater pre-COVID, so it's actually improved on its performance. And yet...
Apparently the AMC Kips Bay will be closing by December because the NYU hospital is expanding. A perfect encapsulation of our times.

Kips Bay closure confirmed by AMC: "We expect that AMC Kips Bay 15 will continue operating until the end of 2026, at which time the theatre will close following the property owner’s decision to exercise its contractual right to terminate the theatre’s lease"

This is an amazing piece of old-school New York footage. Local NBC news after the Mets won the 1986 World Series. Chuck Scarborough. Sue Simmons. Al Roker. Len Berman. And a bunch of absolutely HAMMERED Mets players.

Laughing my ass off reading some old DMs from Wampler. I missed him once we both left Alamo, missed him again during COVID when no one was going anywhere and will miss him dearly now forever.

As @britthates said, he was at his best when things were at their worst. A bad movie, a boring meeting, a lame event…all exponentially improved by Wampler’s presence

Two years ago, I took the love of my life -- James Rocchi to the hospital. He died hours later, around 4:30 AM. One thing most people don't know is that he did not die from a heart attack, as was assumed and reported at the time. He died from an aortic dissection. 1/
