The size of the features in that incredible new #JWST image are hard to fathom. Using the scale bar in the annotated NASA/ESA version as a baseline, I've added another scale indicator with a few (rough) markers for things in our own neighbourhood. Those 'pillars' are *enormous*!

There's actually a biological reason for that so deep in brain wiring that it's not unfeasible for extraterrestrial life to have co-developed that evolution-wise. Your brain sub-consciously dumps short term memory going through doorways to facilitate inmediate threat assessment.

Two weeks ago, I had four precious 12-year-old girls, including my daughter, with me at the county fair. They were getting blue Icees and corndogs for the walk to the car and ride home. (1/21)

9/11 happens and it's "see something, say something." COVID continues to rage and it's "you do you." We demand nothing of ourselves in defense of our neighbor and demand everything from everyone in offensives against an enemy.

There is a curious phenomenon that results from the relatively brief window of time a single human lifetime provides: we perceive the current state of the natural world as “normal”. This is known as the Shifting Baseline Syndrome. 🧵
