NPR laid off some of its most talented producers & canceled the few shows that made them still relevant The industry is changing rapidly & these layoffs are a reminder that producers need to make & own our own content & make better structures than the ones we came from

The hardest part is that our szn is about misogynoir queer, trans, Black women face in hip-hop. Yet w/in NPR, the majority impacted in these layoffs were queer, poc staff & programs. NPR has claimed qtpoc ppl are the same ppl they are trying to reach with their "North Star". 3/4

Layoffs always sting. But this wasn't a layoff at @CDSDuke. By firing their beloved staff, Duke's Center for Documentary Studies has effectively closed. CDS was a little miracle at @DukeU, a ray of sunshine on Duke's hostile, pretentious campus.

@OpeOluOla & the CDS board say they're shifting focus to "applied documentary" John Biewen taught probably 1/4 of podcast producers working today. To put that in terms Duke might understand, podcasting is a nearly 4 billion dollar industry. Seems pretty "applicable" to me.

Maybe if the new ED & board had taken some classes here, they would have known to just say what they really mean.
