Pius IX: "Whoever says: 'The Roman Pontiff can, and ought to, reconcile himself, and come to terms with progress, liberalism, and modern civilization'—anathema sit" Leo XIV: Consider the glories of progress. Consider science. Consider the moon landing 🚀 vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/e…

In a way the Vatican II vision is finally coming in to its own, and it's an appealing vision. The pre-conciliar church was offering to be the ruling authority of your nation. Naturally that provoked suspicion. The post-conciliar church only aims to enrich it spiritually.

Unfortunately in the process of getting rid of its overbearing former ambition the church somehow also lost a lot of what it actually had to give.

I think for me the deepest appeal of ad orientem is not the second coming or the sun or Eden, it’s that the priest prays on my behalf, and the spatial geometry should reflect that, whether it’s through common orientation or a raised altar like in some Italian churches.

At some level, I don’t think we can say that Catholicism was killed top down by Vatican II because when the Jansenists tried similar reforms in the 1780s the people literally rioted, burnt the bishop’s chair and books, and put everything back. So obviously attitudes had changed.

The organic growth of Halloween now is like how Christianity grew when it was rising. Apocryphal gospels, pious legends, weeklong devotions, so many relics… people just wanted more and more.

Genuinely frightening how deluded people can be. Almost all these things are either things Rome has already done, has announced (in writing) they want to do, or are simply extrapolations of a trajectory they’re already on. But trad moral fervor blinds them to this.

When you read medieval introductions they're like oh my worthless treatise might help 1-2 people—I didn't even want to write it but the brothers made me—and then it's amazing. But then you read the early moderns and they're like yeah I'm gonna solve this entire scientific field

right now in this treatise—but you know I haven't revised it because I have a dinner date tonight—anyway it's over for Aristotle that idiot. And it's like in the mid 20th century this spirit finally got into most of the theologians.

Of course, often in life the intelligent thing to say is "we don't know what we are talking about."

In order to understand the depth of Plato’s disdain for democracy you have to imagine if the 1960s counterculture had been fervently pro-war and Woodstock had had ecstatic anthems about exterminating the Vietcong and then they had put Cardinal Ratzinger on trial and executed him.

Basically trads think Vatican II has to be recovered from and Rome thinks it has to be fully implemented. And if you point this out to them they think you're evil. I guess they also get mad at the weather report for not saying "sunny every day forever".

I write this mainly because judging from on here you'd think that inevitably there's going to be a great Traddening very soon and I think this is some kind of delusive wishful thinking. The Vatican have set themselves up for some of these things for decades. They mean it!
Vatican to do list for the next 50 years: - remove the filioque from the creed - remove the tiara from emblems – more lay say in election of bishops - Amoris for contraception - deaconesses - more inter-communion with non-Catholics - more non-Catholic saints - common Easter date

(These are my predictions, not my wishlist, although I do support some of them. Also, banning the old mass – they've already said they'll do that.)
