It took this post to make me realise that as programmers we really can build almost anything we want or need. We don't have to rely on big tech.

I refuse to pay $100+/year for a budgeting app, so I just made my own, in Google Sheets.
It still handles CSVs from my bank and draws pretty charts too. But without a subscription.

Week 2 building my workout app - super-late-but-better-than-never
Big milestone: app now comes with pre-loaded workouts, instead of starting empty. Cos nobody likes a blank screen.
Plus other boring work. But getting closer to something people could actually use. Exciting.
Getting back into building in public. Creating an outdoor workout iOS app for people who hate gyms (like me).
Been using it myself for 2+ weeks and it's already changed my workouts.
This week: battling WorkoutKit, SwiftData and concurrency🏃♂️📱😩
Publishing my first iOS app for review!
What a palaver. Why do I need to publish a Privacy Policy for an app that collects no personal info whatsoever
And here’s how the app looks today - quite pleased with it so far 😀
Honestly, Claude is the superpower that’s helped me get to this stage. Soooo often I would get lost in yak-shaving or some other pointless task. Well, not any more.
I’m building an app to help you remember things about your friends. Here’s how it’s looking.
So far it’s been quite fun to build! Expo / React Native / TinyBase. #buildinpublic
Productive day - got my very first React Native app built and installed on my iPhone, all thanks to Expo!
Quite surprised I achieved it tbh 😂
Shortwave is a very nice radio app for Linux. Easy to find and listen to radio - without the modern annoyances of:
- preroll ads on Alexa (like the dreadful @BBCSounds & @tunein)
- UK copyright blocking
- having to register and then accept 1,000 cookies
Claude.ai casually writing a shell script for Keycloak that needs a lot of specific knowledge, and getting it correct first time.
In years gone by, this would have taken me a whole day. Absolutely amazing.
