We talk a lot about creating AI characters. Not nearly enough about what happens when the platforms behind them disappear.
Character.AI recently filed for bankruptcy. A company with roughly 12 million active users, losing $8–9 million a month, and now Disney is looking to acquire some of its technology for $20 million.
As someone working in this space, it’s pretty sad to watch. Not because I think Disney is making a bad move, but because I think this says a lot about where the AI industry is heading.
AI is both an ever-expanding universe and a black hole.
It gives us incredible creative power. It eats up tasks, spits out solutions and makes us feel like we can build entire companies overnight. Sometimes we can.
But I think we’re starting to see the cost of moving too fast. Billion-dollar valuations, massive teams, endless growth targets. And somehow, millions of users still aren’t enough.
Who’s actually stopping to ask whether we’re building something people care about? Or something that can last?
I keep coming back to Walt Disney. To me, his greatest achievement wasn’t animation or technology. It was empathy. Making people genuinely care about something that doesn’t exist. I think he would have looked at AI in the face and gave it a hug because now he can let his imagination run free, while understanding that deadlines must be met and story is everything.
That’s an incredibly hard thing to master. You can manufacture engagement, optimize retention and accelerate production, but you can’t shortcut genuine emotional connection.
It’s why I believe so strongly in keeping humans in the creative process. The storytellers, engineers, artists and teammates who challenge each other and bring something unexpected into the room.
I think we’re entering an entirely new era of entertainment, and there’s a real opportunity to build it differently.
Empathy isn’t the opposite of innovation. It’s what makes innovation worth something.

What happens when AI meets emotional storytelling?
We built a new kind of series that didn’t take us $100M to make. But with the right tools in the hands of filmmakers, our monsters are ready to make movies.

Excited to see The Monster Library featured here. We believe AI will move characters beyond content, into companions that help combat loneliness.
Language models describe the world. World models inhabit it. That distinction is starting to matter enormously.
This week’s newsletter is a deep dive on one of the core trends shaping our 2026 programming: spatial intelligence, and what it means for the future of creativity.
Every environment a creative builds in these tools is training data, so the artists shaping these spaces really are co-authors of what comes next ↓
We tested 1000 characters before we found what worked and now we are building emotional continuity with our monster friends and community of over 1.5M fans.

What makes IP defensible in the AI age?
Not necessarily cinematic universes (Marvel fatigue). The sticky stuff is: Ready to be remixed; emotionally continuous (companions > trailers); tested by algorithm before it's canonized
