As low-quality contributions increase across open source repositories, more contributors should have the tools to help manage repos. Users with triage, write, maintain, or admin access can now archive PRs.

Users with triage role or higher can now archive and unarchive pull requests. • Archiving closes PRs, makes them read-only, and hides them from public view • Unarchiving restores commenting but does not reopen the PR github.blog/changelog/2026-1…

Why can't we delete PRs like issues?

we considered allowing PRs to be deleted entirely, but many maintainers wanted to preserve access to the code for auditing and retain the full context of a user’s previous contributions. also, some repos/orgs can’t delete code for legal reasons

Archived PRs are only visible to admins, so unlike closed issues, archived PRs are hidden from the public view

github just adds a new state flag to the pr object so the ci pipeline stops triggering and the diff is hidden from the main branch view, but the history stays intact for audit logs

You know what would really help? And we had to build a workaround for it because GitHub doesn't support it: granting deeper Moderation rights to triage role including banning Users from the org
