My father #French #mathematician #JeanPierreSerre, youngest #FieldsMedal at 27, today 100 years old, who spoke about his #maths souvenirs in front of a crowd at the Institut Henri Poincaré on September 15th.
100 years old. Still the sharpest mind in the room.
Jean-Pierre Serre, youngest Fields Medalist in history (age 27), first Abel Prize winner, and the “Mozart of mathematics,” turned 100 on September 15 and is still lecturing, still writing on the blackboard, still shaping the field.
Happy 100th to the greatest living mathematician. The rest of us are just trying to keep up.

TMLR has faced a deluge of submissions, necessitating stricter desk rejection policies due to limited reviewer capacity
Co-EiC Nihar Shah reached out to authors of 10 papers slated for desk reject. Could they answer questions about their *own* submission?

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers.
He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

I've been unsettled lately. Reading messages or papers feels like dissociating. Everything seems a bit alien, even if it's completely human. I've had a realization: When our simulations finally exited the Uncanny Valley, they brought the Uncanny with them. nsaphra.net/post/uncanny/

🧑💻🧑🏫 I'm recruiting a post-doc to work on Tabular Foundation Models, one of the hotest topics in AI, where we are at the leading edge.
This is an opportunity to develop the next-level tabular AI, blending deep learning and tables.

i really like the pain avoidance angle. slots into my "paon/friction is when you learn" angle. when combined > cognitive debt.

🧵 1/ How well do LLMs actually do on Olympiad-level math?
We evaluated frontier models on 455 problems from the IMO Shortlist.
Unlike most benchmarks, we emphasize proof validity, not just final answer correctness.

Part 2: Why do boosted trees outperform deep learning on tabular data??
@Jeffaresalan &I suspected that answers are obfuscated by the 2 being considered very different algs
Instead we show they are more similar than you’d think — making their diffs smaller but predictive!🧵1/n

A new paper about AI in Materials Discovery has gained a lot of attention - it reports a big increase in productivity of scientists using AI tools, and interesting secondary effects of using AI for science.
But do the technical claims stack up? Let's see...
This is the best paper written so far about the impact of AI on scientific discovery
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
There seem to be grave concerns about the integrity of the research.
MIT announced that they "conducted an internal, confidential review and concluded that the paper should be withdrawn from public discourse."

I'm sorry Noam, but a blog post does not come close to meeting the standards of reproducibility, methodology, acknowledgment of prior work, and fair comparison with the state of the art, that a technical paper has to satisfy.
Look, when you develop new technology under pressure to have short-term product impact, you just build the thing that you think is most likely to work as quickly as possible. If it's good enough, you deploy it. You may not care whether it's particularly innovative, whether it actually beats the state of the art, or whether it's a horrible kludge or The Right Thing to do in the long run. It's OK to delude yourself into thinking it's the best thing since slice bread, as long as your boss and the product people can also be deluded.
But you know that's not how research works.
