I’m also glad meeting one BSA students’ representative in person @ajayibenmi and other fellow Nigerians doing cool stuff in Botany. In the same vein networking with different kinds of people doing cool stuff in Botany was my highlight for #Botany2024

Wake up, honey: new phylogeny of flowering plants just dropped! Over 9K species, 58% of genera, and all 416 families inferred using Angiosperms353! Out now in Nature - congrats to the @KewScience team and SO MANY collaborators! nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Very important to note that a paper of this scale would not have been possible without: - Herbaria! especially @KewScience - a global team of collaborators willing to openly share data - advancements in efficient open source software - investment in basic biodiversity research

IMO we save herbaria by making them critical to the research AND teaching missions of universities. Since 2020, @bceenet we've been developing teaching resources using natural history collections. Plus we have $$$ available for instructor training! qubeshub.org/community/group…

It's my goal to have specimens in front of as many undergrads as possible. Non-majors botany gets a CURE studying invasive species. Upper division classes sample specimens for lab projects. We've had English and Art students visit and mount specimens, inspiring creative works.

🙋‍♀️ My first research experience was in @NYBG's herbarium. The mentorship & experiences there confirmed that plant bio was the field for me & led directly to where I am now. I'm heartbroken for trainees who won't be able to fall in love with plants if the @DukeU herbarium closes

A timely interview where I share a bit about my trajectory, which is tightly linked to herbaria. Herbaria are treasure troves of biodiversity that allow us to study the present, reconstruct the past, and make predictions about the future, a crucial skill under climate change.

Shocked & distressed that @DukeU & its Dean @susan_alberts, a renowned biologist in her own right, could support dismantling one of the most important plant collections for research & training. It is the largest herbarium in SE USA. A destructive decision. science.org/content/article/…
