Words and terminology matter. It may seem insignificant the difference between feudal and medieval, but it frames the way we think about societies, particularly non-white peoples who are often compared against Europeans. Change starts with the words you choose to use.

The other problem with the term "feudal" is that it is a Marxist concept: feudalism is a stage of economic development on the pathway to communism. In other words, it is a theoretical model and not reflective of actual historical Japanese society.
I saw a new game announced today claiming to be set in "feudal Japan"—so frustrating because the field of history moved beyond this in the 1980s but gamers still insist on using the term "feudal Japan"

This is merely a fraction of the notes I took, not counting notes that play testers themselves wrote
Playtesting notes from earliest days designing the the game. At one point, stance was removed from the game as an experiment and it was a terrible experience, so it went right back into the game #katanacardgame #historicalgamedesign #cardgames #boardgames

@mrtracyalan by Tracy Alan is genuinely awesome. Took us a game to get it, but the second game was clear cut tense. Back and forth with attacks and pollutes... but I was the more noble samurai, taking my opposer’s… instagram.com/p/CCbyjtVBFyE/…

Here is an entry in the Ōmajirushi that shows the mark for the Matsudaira family, who were eager to associate themselves with Tenjin, so they used the kami's six-circle "plum blossom" logo. My updated design retains the core symbol, but freshens up the look (2/2)

A number of sources were used to design the mon associated with each kami: painted scrolls from the period that show military banners, carved wooden plaques on temples and shrines, a scroll of heraldic marks called the Ōmajirushi compiled c. 1624-44 was particularly helpful (1/2)

Wabi-sabi (侘寂) was an aesthetic of the medieval period defined by asymmetry, roughness, austere use of space, simplicity, and modesty—these qualities guided the visual design, as well as limited use of illustration and color.
Some more of the cards from Katana. I really love the look. instagr.am/p/CCJ-m6_h7Mx/
