Being raised in South Africa sharpens one’s understanding of Universal Human Rights. Generally, SA people abhor injustice, hierarchy, the humiliation of others & classism. It’s an imperfect country, but egalitarianism is embedded. Navi Pillay embodies this fully. Congratulations

Anti-apartheid activist and Tutu IP Trust chairperson Dr Mamphela Ramphele says organisations like Afriforum represent the post-apartheid government's failure to hold the beneficiaries of colonialism and apartheid accountable. Ramphele was reacting to a lecture given by Wouter 'Dr Death' Basson, the former head of the apartheid state’s secret chemical and biological warfare programme, Project Coast, at the Afriforum Theatre in Pretoria. Afriforum says it only provided the venue and was not involved in arranging for Basson to speak. Ramphele says the arrogance of organisations like Afriforum results from the ANC government's failure to continue with the work the TRC started.

"Ultimately, you want a leader who is also a servant."
In this interview from 2007, Desmond Tutu described the qualities he believes make a good leader. He says that like Nelson Mandela, a leader should lead for the sake of the people, encapsulate the aspirations of those they represent, and not be motivated by self-glorification.
What qualities do you look for in a leader?

Nelson Mandela Month is more than just a time to honour Madiba's legacy. It is a call to mobilise it.
Building the communities we want to live in requires all of us. Every act of service, every effort to confront injustice, and every contribution, no matter how small, helps create the more just, equal and compassionate society that Madiba envisioned.
Nelson Mandela inspired generations through his unwavering commitment to justice. But his legacy was never meant to end with him. It lives on through the choices we make and the actions we take every day.
This Mandela Month, we are called to put our hands forward and continue the work. The task of building better communities belongs to all of us.
The call is for collective action. The question is: How will you answer it?
