With global temperature rise set to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, urgent and stringent cuts to greenhouse emissions are needed to minimize the magnitude and duration of overshoot and return to 1.5°C by the end of the century, a new UNEP report finds. The Emissions Gap Report 2026: The Point of Return looks at a ‘lowest possible’ 1.5°C overshoot scenario, in which peak warming by around the middle of the century is limited to 1.7-1.8°C and global temperature rise is returned to or below 1.5°C by 2100, with about a 50 per cent chance. url-shortener.me/Q366 via EnviroNews

Environmental advocacy organisations, 350.org and Climate Action Network (CAN), have called on world leaders to urgently strengthen climate commitments and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels following the release of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 2026 Emissions Gap Report. The report, titled “The Point of Return”, released on Wednesday, October 21, warns that current climate policies and national emissions reduction pledges remain insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, with the world projected to experience approximately 2.6°C of warming by the end of the century under current trajectories. url-shortener.me/Q365 via EnviroNews

The strengthening El Niño weather phenomenon, combined with human-induced climate change, could make 2027 one of the hottest years on record, raising concerns over the growing risks of extreme weather and the urgent need for stronger climate adaptation measures. Scientists have described the developing El Niño conditions as “unprecedented,” warning that the phenomenon could intensify global temperature increases and worsen weather extremes as it approaches its expected peak in December. shorturl.at/DcPOO via EnviroNews

A new $78 million programme aims to restore 270,000 hectares of degraded land and improve the livelihoods of five million people across nine countries of the Great Green Wall. With funding support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implementation support from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the initiative will support the regeneration of one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. The initiative brings together nine national governments stretching from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa – Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal – with UNEP, the West African Development Bank (BOAD), and the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall. UNEP will implement eight of the programme’s ten projects and coordinate regional delivery, while BOAD will implement two projects. shorturl.at/dtdpv via EnviroNews
