The biggest strategic blunder the United States could make is to underestimate India. India is not merely another partner in Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy. It is the geographical, demographic and military counterweight that can fundamentally complicate Chinese strategic calculations. India sits astride the Indian Ocean, commands critical approaches to the Malacca Strait, possesses a huge standing military, a rapidly expanding defence-industrial base, nuclear deterrence, a growing blue-water navy and combat experience that cannot simply be replicated through technology transfers. If India and the United States build a genuinely deep defence relationship intelligence sharing, logistics, AI, drones, space, maritime surveillance, precision weapons and co-development the strategic equation in Asia changes dramatically. China would no longer be planning against the United States in the Pacific alone. It would have to calculate against America in the Pacific and India on its western and southern strategic flanks. That is the nightmare Beijing would prefer Washington never create. And here’s the uncomfortable truth for Washington: America does not need India to fight America’s wars. America needs India to make Chinese military coercion prohibitively complicated. India can be the decisive military power that turns Chinese regional dominance from an ambition into an expensive proposition. The U.S.-India relationship is therefore not just about buying American weapons. It is about building a combined strategic ecosystem capable of balancing China for decades.
