The US manufacturing revival seems to really only apply to manufacturing data centers

The state of the world in one chart.
🇪🇺 Europe represses wages and exports its savings: that's the "Europoor" phenomenon.
🇺🇸 America turns European savings into soaring tech valuations: that's the AI bubble.
🇨🇳 China builds the factories and floods the world with cheap goods: that's involution.
And each loop feeds the next.

I want to talk about Patrick Collison.
Let’s start with a simple acknowledgment: he is one of the most impressive philanthropists right now:
- When Covid hit, he and Tyler Cowen launched Fast Grants and got money to scientists within days.
- He helped launch the Arc Institute, so biologists could do science instead of drowning in paperwork for grants.
- And Stripe, under Collison’s leadership, built Frontier: a super ambitious pledge to guarantee a market for carbon removal tech.
This is all really awesome! Few billionaires have thought harder about how to do a lot of good with their money.
But now we have to talk about what the hell Patrick Collison is doing in California.
He has given $15 million to ‘Building a Better California’, one of the most cynical political campaigns I’ve seen in a long time. It's the main vehicle fighting Prop 40: a one-time 5% tax on the state's ~200 billionaires (to make up for federal cuts to healthcare for low-income Californians).
And look at how this group does it:
- It’s funding an extremely aggressive "No" campaign (opponents are outspending supporters roughly six to one).
- It also put two decoy measures on the same ballot. Prop 41 *seems* to be about good governance. Prop 42 is sold as ‘protecting your retirement savings’. But both contain a clause: if either gets more votes than the billionaire tax, the tax is cancelled.
- Meanwhile, the retirement story is total nonsense. Prop 40 already exempts pensions. CalMatters calls the deluge of ads misleading and the SF Chronicle calls Prop 41 a ‘cynical poison pill’.
- The sad reality is that all this misinformation is working though. Polls show small majorities backing the billionaire tax and the measures designed to kill it. You can vote yes on all three and cancel out your own vote. Most people don’t realize this.
Through all of it, Collison HASN'T SAID A WORD about why he's funding this slimy campaign.
This is a public intellectual who writes thoughtfully about progress. If he believes Prop 40 is bad policy, he should do the honorable thing and make the case! And tell us what he'd rather do about extreme concentrations of wealth and power, or explain why he thinks they aren't a problem for our democracy and civilization.
Instead we get silence + $15 million for a campaign built on misinformation and shady political tactics.
@patrickc, what are you doing?
This is the dodgiest and most-desperate thing I’ve seen in the bubble so far. Amazon selling their chips to a group of investors and leasing them back - an off balance sheet arrangement done in plain sight. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel

💥🌊BREAKING: The first naval battle in history between two unmanned surface vessels has taken place in the Black Sea.
A Ukrainian Navy Sargan 3000 USV, armed with a 12.7 mm Protector RWS, engaged and destroyed a Russian naval drone.
The engagement marks the first known combat between two uncrewed naval vessels at sea.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Xi has finally brought the real estate market/bubble below the point at which he was made the heir apparent to Hu Jintao, in October 2007. Now another decade might be needed to solve the provincial debt. All in all, I expect it'll go down in history as a decent crash landing.

A sad day but few care, especially the British right obsessed by the ECHR and its faux threats to British sovereignty. Today we lost ITV to US media group Comcast and EasyJet to US private credit company, Castlelake. Britain is ever more a vassal economy in thrall to the USA.

The first time I heard the name "Homer Sarasohn," it was an ex-@Apple engineer telling me there should bronze statues of the guy in Apple Park, Cupertino.
"These ideas didn't come out of nowhere," the source said, when I asked about Apple's supply chain strategy. "It all goes back to what Homer taught in occupied Japan."
"Sorry, who?" I asked. I was intrigued but entirely baffled. Occupied Japan?
All I really learned in that conversation was the spelling of his name. I had told the source I was researching a feature on how Apple manufactures its products. He wished me well but said he wouldn't help. All he said was that Apple's supply chain strategy was important, ill-understood, and wildly counterintuitive. And that the key was this 29-year old engineer summoned to war-devastated Tokyo in 1946.
Finally, nearly three years later, I've written a double-feature for the @FinancialTimes telling Homer's story, connecting it with why a struggling Steve Jobs discovered the value of "process" in 1990, and then how these ideas helped shape Apple's supply chain strategy in the decade now remembered as the greatest corporate turnaround ever.
Why wasn't this in *Apple in China*, you might ask? Well, in my book pitch, I wanted it to be the opening chapter. But, structurally, that was difficult to pull off, and I worried that spending a few precious weeks studying 1940s Japan was a bad way to spend my book leave.
Once the book was published I kept reading the few obscure articles about Homer. I even got to check out the Library of Congress archives, which has the Japanese textbook he wrote for top corporate executives, black & white photos of Homer in Japan, and much else.
Then, two months ago, I realized Apple's 50th anniversary was probably the last chance I'd get. I wasn't sure anyone else would care, but the feedback has been great -- and part two really packs some oomph.
I'm thrilled to have it published. Hope you enjoy!

During the Korean War, Denmark deployed MS Jutlandia, a fully equipped hospital ship that treated nearly 5,000 wounded, including many US soldiers.
Danish doctors and nurses helped save American lives. The crew were awarded the Korea Medal for their service.
That’s allied solidarity - not sending ships when nobody has asked for them and they aren’t needed.
