If given freedom and encouragement, young #creativity & unencumbered #aesthetics will produce #art that inspires & invigorates you #artsed
Music (and art generally) is capable of defying the horrors of fate with a hopeful "f--- you." Nonetheless, I cry and mourn, while, with memories of Cavaillé-Coll's monstrous organ in my ears, my soul screams "Aux armes, citoyens...!!!!" #NotreDame youtube.com/watch?v=HN19Zq3B…
Spent my morning studying the connections @azedschools standards for social studies make to world cultures. Disappointing to see that apart from Egypt, Africa is basically ignored. We need to do better. #blackedu #sschat
Today, I cherish Marin Mersenne who in 1636 shook his fist at a cloud and wrote his Harmonie Universelle, complaining bitterly about the use of counterpoint; the "diversity from which error proceeds." Thankfully, nobody listened to poor old M.M. #kendricklamar #HipHopEd #Mused
You thought #hiphop was profane? 'Imma let you finish' while Henry Purcell & lads reach out from the dead with their #zombie arms to hand you your smutty ### on a 17th century platter. #earlymusic #uhohmusiced Thank you @asumusiclibrary for the free books!!
It's 6:30am. Do you know where your kids are? Hint: It's not early morning jazz band. #mariachi #uhohmusiced #whatifmusiced #mused #ArtsEd @ASUMusicEd
There can be more to teaching or learning rhythm than doing ta-tis (&etc). Some pedagogies that appear new, are actually based in VERY old ways of thinking. Remember: Barlines and 4/4 time (&etc) are relatively new, and culturally specific. #uhohmusiced ethanhein.com/wp/my-nyu-mast…
Singing in parts is evil. Also counterpoint: "...so the unison, which does not have here the esteem that it should have, triumphs over the diversity from which error proceeds..." -- Mersenne /Harmonie Universelle/ (1636) #uhohmusiced
#Whatifmusiced inquiry = something other than "students will..." & "correct fingerings" &etc?
Sometimes music education requires soldering. Simple piezo pickups for DIY musical instruments. #mused #MusicEd #STEMed #STEAM #whatifmusiced @ASUMusicEd
Who/What does your assessment rubric for "music education" exclude/ignore? Is teaching an art?
Are your students artists?
Remember: all artistic movements have begun (to one degree or another) in conflict. #ArtsEd #mused #musedchat #amea
When the "office" doesn't open until 9am but you arrive at 6am because you're so used to freelancing that you prefer to start working at whatever time you happen to wake up. #freelancing #ArtsEd #teachingartist
It would be more fun & interesting if @Google Arts & Culture app suggested something less overtly representational: Rothko, Motherwell, Pollack, etc... #ArtsEd #artselfie #artists
Had a staggering experience looking at a 2200 year old drum while working @MIMphx today... Tomorrow I'll take a picture. #twitterfail #mused #musedchat
Art teacher fired over Rococo, Impressionist paintings!! I have issues with Rococo art too, but they have nothing to do with boobs. #artsed #teachingartist #teachingartists #aesthetics news.hjnews.com/logan_hj/tea…
Who says music history has to be boring? Whose history? Brass instruments and scatology ("fart jokes") go back at least 2000 years [pictured example is 12th century] -- from a @gotmedieval blog many years ago. #mused #artsed #MusicEducation #teachingartist #InternationalMonkeyDay
The racial disparities of these results suggests that, like Roy Moore's victims of many years ago, our society still has a lot of growing up to do. xitter.cf/SikhProf/status/940787…
How will you exercise #creativity today? Adapting a curriculum to individual needs? Imagining, drawing, engineering, or programming a musical robot? Making tacos? Improvising in an 18th century north German contrapuntal style? #artsed #teachingartist #teachingartists #mused
