Turns out all I needed to become a dog person was my own dog. Meet Ernest Henry Shackleton.

Somewhere along the way, the concept of psychological safety underwent concept creep. People started to say they were unsafe if another person disagreed with them. They started to say that safe environments meant ones where everyone talked the same way, thought the same way and never ever joked or teased.
People started, in short, to equate safety with a total lack of challenge. Being a safe person meant signing up to an unspoken code of conduct. Never speaking up or ask awkward questions. A safe space meant one where everyone had to keep to the rules and Be Kind.
But true psychological safety comes from knowing that you can tolerate disagreement. It comes from knowing that people can have different views, and they may challenge you…and you’ll be safe enough anyway. It comes from knowing that you can express what you think, and you won’t be shunned or kicked out.
True psychological safety comes when we are not afraid of discomfort, not when we try to eliminate it.
Let’s stop pretending otherwise.

My latest blog is a review of the BBC’s impressive three-part series All Kinds of Minds, exploring the 2020s’ soaring rise in awareness and diagnoses of neurodivergent conditions.

A really thoughtful and generous review of All Kinds of Minds by Dyspraxic Dad 🙏
(And yes, I'd love to make more one day. Such an endlessly fascinating topic...)
Whole series now available on @BBCSounds.

Friends/pod peeps. The FT canned my pod column last Nov after 10 years (a good innings for any column, tbh) but happily BBC Culture has decided now is a good time to start running pod reviews. So here they are & here I am. Pls share to get the word out! bbc.co.uk/culture/article/20…

Consider listening to @nathanfiler's three part audio documentary discussing #Neurodiversity to understand the complexity related to this subject including the language, educational environments and impact in adulthood. 🧠

Don’t forget to place yourself by the wireless tomorrow (Monday) at 11am @BBCRadio4.
It’s the first episode of my series about #autism and #adhd. I really hope I’ve done the subject justice and hold the complexity with compassion.
Tried my best, anyway.

I fear this is bad timing as the Channel 4 show sucks up all the ADHD oxygen, but my new @BBCRadio4 documentary series starts on 24th.
First ep explores the Language of Neurodiversity. I’ve interviewed lots of people and try to hold the uncertainties.

I’ve been learning about #neurodiversity by interviewing a load of people who know more about it than me.
First episode lands on @BBCRadio4 and @BBCSounds on Monday 24th at 11am.

Literature is humanity’s longest conversation with itself about what it means to be alive. It has been going on for thousands of years. You are not late, you are not unqualified, you are not too much or too little or too broken. Pull up a chair. This conversation was always about you.
