Seismic shift in how membership in the international economic order is construed.
A group of 40 @wto Members have now condemned Belarus for its complicity in Russia's aggression. Those who do not support the rules-based international order cannot benefit from it. We will not further consider its application for WTO accession. Read our statement here 👇🏼

Great time for small market baseball!
I made a deal with @MayorMKE. If the @Brewers win, I’ll cruise around St. Pete in a Brewers jersey. But when the @RaysBaseball win he'll sport some Rays gear!

I wrote about the coming disconnect between voter anger over geoeconomics and the levers Congress, any Congress has to lower prices. Today’s news is an amazing flow of evidence in support of that thesis. A thread:
American voters are angry about the economy, prices and insecurity. They have connected their plight at home with Donald Trump’s war in Iran and his policy on tariffs. Read @natsecHeather's latest analysis for Chatham House. Expert comment | bit.ly/4hYQXxF |

Dems face a post-midterms clash over trade. Follow Trump’s lead or shift into free-market mode? “There’s going to be a lot of debates about this as we move forward,” says one Biden-era trade official. “It’s really messy right now.” @drdesrochers politico.com/news/2026/10/23…

kinda crazy to think that the 7:00 PM poll closing states alone will likely tell us enough abt the environment that the 8:00 PM clsosures will hit like a nuclear bomb

This is for my colleagues who yelled “protectionism!” when this issue was first raised during the Biden Admin. And for the folks who are still yelling that.
❗️ The Dutch intelligence service AIVD is warning people not to hold confidential conversations in or near their cars, saying the microphones in many modern vehicles can technically be switched on remotely to eavesdrop. Some state actors can request car data from carmakers and other companies or hack in to get it themselves, the agency says. It advises skipping wireless charging and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pairing, using a USB data blocker and not taking a car with an external camera to a sensitive location.

Once upon a time Graham, Nye and Carnesale were owls.
Jackie is a colleague so this was all in the spirit of good faith debate. One clarification: I am not a China hawk. Maybe an owl? The hawks attacked what we did in the last admin, and the doves did too, so there must be some space in the middle a a good number of us inhabit.

Great piece with some amazing quotes by @nahaltoosi. Fun to see Mike Waltz following the path blazed by Madeleine Albright and Samantha Power.
"The late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told people that Waltz had sought his support in becoming secretary of State should Marco Rubio, whom many pols suspect has presidential aspirations, leave the role" politico.com/news/magazine/2…

Regular reminder that, in February, CBO projected that it would take at least 30 years for the 10-year Treasury rate to surpass 4.4%. Seven months later it hit 5%. That's what happens when a president launches a war, blows up deficits, and then demands to borrow $1.3T more.
Breaking News: The 10-year Treasury yield, one of the world’s most important interest rates, breached 5% for the first time in years, capping a long stretch of turmoil in the bond market that has pushed up borrowing costs for companies and consumers. nyti.ms/3UPIvaY

The House appears to be moving towards a vote on the Lindsey Graham Russia Tariff Act next week. But events of the last few weeks only reinforce the reasons to be skeptical of the bill: 1. Recent U.S. diplomacy towards Russia by all accounts included offers of *lifting major US sanctions* on Russia in response to even a limited peace deal. If the U.S. is already putting relief on the table, I don't expect the (non-compulsory) sanctions in the bill to amount to much. 2. Meanwhile, the way I read the bill, Trump could *continue the tariffs* even if there IS a peace agreement, really just turning the bill into a tariff tool for any country that imports Russian oil. 3. I'd welcome a strong Russia sanctions bill. This isn't it. This a tariff bill with some discretionary sanctions thrown in that the President has not shown he plans to implement.

Hey, @SouthwestAir . You’re really just going to leave flight 2595 sitting on the taxiway indefinitely while another flight unloads and reloads at what the pilot says was our gate? You already cancelled my first flight and made me pay for my own replacement today.

Via @bradrcarson, the most useful and thought-provoking piece you’ll read about AI this week—yes, you, AI neophyte, skeptic, coward, you will understand all the words.
New essay! A big-picture, speculative article on how most of the huge questions about the coming AI revolution aren’t really about AI in a narrow, technical sense - and why it will be a golden age for polymaths, philosophers, and moderate epistemic despair. Link: conspicuouscognition.com/p/m…

Astonishing story, not just because the Bessent failed to forewarn the ECB but he then goes on to blame the ECB for leaking the fact. A truly alarming breakdown in international financial relations...
FT: Washington’s sales of euros, carried out by the New York Federal Reserve on behalf of the US Treasury, were “very striking” and “sad”.... “This has never happened before,” they added, saying that decades of close co-operation between western central banks that fostered financial stability and economic growth may have come under threat. ft.trib.al/A7wXB5D

For the non-trade nerds among us, a roundup of what you’ve missed, what you have to look forward to and why, paradoxically, this haphazard approach to tariffs gets harder to change even as its popularity declines across the board with the US public.
