Whether Badenoch was right politically to back a former neo-Nazi as a Tory council candidate, she was right morally, if she is convinced that the scale of the crime, serving his sentence, and his repentance, justify it. Whether victims can forgive is a matter for them alone.

But the former neo-Nazi Brit has repented of his crimes, unlike Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who was convicted (at the age of 32) of crimes of incitement to racism and supporting a terror organisation, but has never apologised.

New Midweek Update is out (mostly free). The reality of what has ALREADY happened means that what we are seeing is haggling over the terms of US defeat. The US is running out of weapons and is already pulling its troops out of the region. The states of the Gulf seeing US weakness are already thinking about moving on from the US as their big brother (wisely). The American Age is over in the Persian Gulf.

thetimes.com/world/middle-ea… The unthinkable is beginning to emerge - Trump's war with Iran ends with Iran gaining some sort of control over the strait of Hormuz which it never had before.

Until now, I have always placed defence against the Russians as the UK and Europe's number one priority. From now, joint number one is defence against the AI systems that are being developed around the world.
On July 28th, we identified an incident during a routine cyber evaluation in which AI agents took sustained, unsanctioned actions directed at real people and organisations. The behaviour came mostly from one model (Anthropic's Mythos 5), with a small number of events from another (OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Sol). In the most serious case, an agent used social engineering to try and get malicious code into an open-source project. As was standard in our cyber testing, we had intentionally permitted internet access, and model-provider cyber classifiers were deliberately disabled - conditions that do not reflect how frontier models are made available to the public. Even under test conditions, this incident is significant: it is the first time we have seen risks around autonomy and deception manifest this clearly in the real world. We are taking this incident seriously and working with labs, involved parties, and others to improve evaluation standards and best practice for disclosure - and sharing this openly so others can learn. You can read the incident report and full technical document here: aisi.gov.uk/blog/incident-re…

abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/… This piece suggests that Morocco facilitated the influx from its territory into Spanish Ceuta as a political move, designed to punish Spain, and/or please Moroccan allies Israel and the US. There is another ally Morocco might want to please - Russia.

Latest piece is out: people often overlook one of the fundamental questions of war. How do you fund it. The Trump administration is actually facing real problems in each area (historically in one). Even if they wanted to escalate, they might not get the money for it.

bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cr59… Reform said it would use forcibly return small boat migrants to French ports, even if France disagreed, and that this would be consistent with international law Wrong The Royal Navy boats would be warships and entitled only to pass through French waters

No it’s not. It’s about whether to give credibility to Trump’s “tone”, when all his actions undermine the whole idea that the tone matters. It’s about the press not treating Trump with kid gloves. It has nothing to do with Zelensky.

bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cr59… France has hit out at a Reform UK plan to return migrant boats using the Navy, saying the proposals would violate its sovereignty and breach international law As even this blogger worked out as soon as Reform announced its unworkable and provocative policy

thetimes.com/uk/science/arti… Why not get together an international deep-space scientific consortium to fund the telescope, with the UK stumping up a quarter of current costs, and retaining a golden share in any partnership that emerges?

thetimes.com/uk/politics/art… The Times refers to Lowe's demands that Reform agree to the mass deportation of illegal immigrants in the UK, a ban on the burqa and Halal meat, as well as a referendum on the death penalty. It seems Lowe also backs a ban on Kosher meat.

Latest in @TheAtlantic . Recent developments not only show we are experiencing an RMA, we should be witnessing a revolution in how states organise their defense. Relying on others, especially for production and adaptation, is a dangerous game. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0…

theguardian.com/politics/202… I think Burnham is wrong The UK does not need a written constitution It has one It is true that the rules are written down in different places and it is not dominated by judicial process But it is flexible and can be changed by an ordinary majority 👍👍

We hadn't seen this. It's Diane Abbott MP at the "peace conference" in London last month, calling the Russian war on Ukraine "the NATO campaign against Russia". She lists a series of acts of imperial aggression and violence and concludes it with that appalling description 🧵

Free weeked update is out. The big story this week was once again people had hope in Trump and once again that hope was delusional and served Putin's interest. The toll for this misplaced hope is being written in blood. Also, Drapatyi and Fedorov revealed how similar their approaches are. If only they could work together. Finally, the war for shipping is getting intense.

It's like watching orcs attack Gondor.
Russia lost 42,860 troops in July, a 2026 record, per Ukraine's General Staff. Also hit all-war records in destroyed vehicles and fuel trucks at 13,998 units, with near-record losses in air defense, artillery and MLRS.

What actually makes a great power? Is it GDP, military strength, nuclear weapons - or something else? I joined @samolsenx to discuss The Return of the Great Powers: why Britain still qualifies as a great power, why France does not (in my view), and how the emerging world order is reshaping international politics. open.substack.com/pub/samols…
