In ๐๐๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ข๐๐ก๐๐ฆ (2024), Dr. Nathanael Mathews revisits the history of a Swahili-speaking Afro-Arab diaspora connecting East Africa and Oman.
Similarly, in ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฬ๐ (2022), Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse explores the fate of Afro-Belgian Mรฉtis children forcibly separated from their families during Belgian colonial rule in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Despite their different historical contexts, both books illuminate underdocumented diasporic histories whose cultural traces endure across Eastern African societies, Belgium, and Oman.

a Rwandan musical icon and one of the custodians of Rwandaโs historical memory through music, is gone.
She will be remembered for her role in preserving Rwandan culture during her years in exile; the contribution of her songs to the artistic and cultural front during the Rwanda Patriotic Frontโs Liberation War; and her immense artistic contribution to preserving and shaping oral history and the memory of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
She leaves behind a lasting legacy, a story, and a life worth celebrating as one of the most remarkable artists in Rwandaโs history.

Dafroza Gauthier (1954โ2026), born Dafroza Mukarumongi on August 4, 1954, in Astrida (now Huye), Rwanda, under Belgian colonial rule, was a French-Rwandan chemical engineer and human-rights and Genocide victimsโ justice activist. During the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, she lost many of members of her family.
In November 2001, Dafroza, together with her husband Alain Gauthier, co-founded

Through the CPCR, Dafroza and Alain Gauthier collected testimonies and evidence, worked with Genocide survivors, investigators, and French judicial authorities, and contributed to the prosecution of different alleged Genocide perpetrators in France.
As her family, friends, and humanity mourn Dafrozaโs passing, her life will continue to be celebrated as that of a voice who spoke for victims and a tireless woman who dedicated her life to seeking justice for the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

On October 1, 1990, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and its armed wing, the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), crossed the Uganda - Rwanda border at Kagitumba. This marked the beginning of the four-year war between the RPA and the ๐น๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐ฬ๐๐ ๐
๐ค๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ (FAR).ย
The war followed more than three decades of Rwandan exile and refugee displacement dating back to the 1959 - 1962 refugee crisis. It was also shaped by unresolved questions of return, citizenship, and belonging across the Great Lakes region. These questions involved the local indigenous Kinyarwanda-speaking communities, also known as Banyarwanda, as well as Rwandan migrants, Rwandan refugees and their descendants in Rwandaโs neighboring countries.
Scholars such as Mahmood Mamdani place the RPFโs 1990 armed return within this broader regional history. Today, October 1 is observed in Rwanda as Patriotic Day (๐๐๐ข๐๐ ๐ ๐ค๐ ๐บ๐ข๐๐ข๐๐๐ ๐ผ๐๐โ๐ข๐๐ข), a national day of reflection on patriotism and the countryโs history.

Doyle stayed in Rwanda for much of the 100 days of the Genocide, reporting from the country when many foreign journalists had left.
He later reflected on his experience in โReporting the Genocide,โ a chapter in the book The Media and the Rwanda Genocide.

with Nick Louvel. Released in 2015, the documentary tells the story of Rwandan women who came forward to testify about sexual violence during the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in the trial of Jean-Paul Akayesu. The 1998 judgment by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) recognized rape as an act of genocide. The film also highlights the young international lawyers and activists who fought for the womenโs voices to be heard, preserving an important chapter in the history of international justice. The Uncondemned premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival on October 9, 2015, and was screened at the United Nations on October 19, 2016.
