Happy #WorldTeachersDay! Teachers do more than teach. They nurture potential, shape communities, and help build the foundations for healthier, more equitable societies. As we mark World Teachers’ Day, we stand with teachers and recognize their vital role in shaping our futures.

These findings from #IamAPHRC's study across 200 public primary schools in 11 counties are a wake-up call: teachers are showing up and engaged, but that doesn't automatically translate to students participating in learning. Nelson Muhia, Fridah Gatwiri Kiambati (PhD), and @ndonyesarah point out that the gap isn't about effort it's about method. We need to equip educators with practical, learner-centered, differentiated instruction they can actually use in everyday classrooms. Read more: aphrc.org/kenya-has-inve... #IamAPHRC #WeAreAfrica

For more than two decades, Kenya has invested in foundational learning. However, an important question still remains: what happens inside the classroom? The APHRC Foundational Learning in Kenya study examined foundational learning practices in 200 public primary schools across 11 counties. The findings offered insights on how learning is experienced in the classroom. On this #InternationalLiteracyDay, we need to look beyond the investments and policies to understand whether children are getting meaningful opportunities to read, understand, practice, and learn in the classroom. Our latest blog looks inside the classroom to examine classroom practices, teacher and learner engagement, and the conditions that shape the delivery of foundational learning. Many children with developmental disabilities remain excluded from education systems. #IamAPHRC's Mchungwani Saad Rashid, will be shedding light on this critical yet often overlooked challenge of non- inclusive education at the upcoming 2nd EAC Regional Conference on Education. Her presentation, "Unseen and Unassessed: The Inclusion Gap for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Kenya," examines the systemic gaps that continue to exclude children with developmental disabilities from quality education, and what evidence says on closing the gaps. #IamAPHRC #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch #InclusiveEducation @Heri_Africa | @mizizielimu | @ESSA_Africa @ckyobutungi | @Amveyange | @DMDiarafa | @RatemoJuliet | @DorcasOdhiambo | @njerimbuthia | @Hope_shete | @CharityWaweru | @DavidWa1ganjo | @mickarkey | @maloba_david93 | @Chris_Maero | @williamsila | @FlorahKarimi | @Liz_Kimani | @agnes_kiragga | @MosesNgware | @Aijayi | @PaulOdero | @dia_diama | @gody_adero | @SokhnaT37994755 | @EneTira | @weberaicha | @MalickS97 | @NDEYEAWAFALL9 | @SyllaElHadjiMa1 | @aidara_dienaba | @kadzomudzo | @isabelmutuku1 | @AswaniStella | @lamechmutava | @deekagwii | @Stevewainainax

Throwback to one of my favourite conversations on The Scholars Table "The best way to predict the future is to create it." In this episode, I trace my journey from medical officer in rural Uganda to leading one of Africa's top research institutions. We talk about: What years as a rural doctor taught me about leadership What decolonizing global health actually looks like in practice the honest trade-offs between building a career abroad vs. on the continent Why public health is losing the fight against misinformation — and what to do about it youtu.be/ZGoMXa2Vjww?si=wukP…

Africa doesn't lack solutions. It lacks sustained investment in the institutions that generate them. I co-authored this piece with @CatyFondsmond of @gatesfoundation because the moment demands clarity: African-led science exists. It works. What it consistently lacks is the institutional backing to move from pilot to policy to national scale. From AI-enabled ultrasound in coastal Kenya to postpartum haemorrhage tools in Nigeria — the evidence is here. The leadership is here. What remains is the investment — sustained, trust-based, and oriented toward the day it's no longer needed. Read the full piece 👇 cnbcafrica.com/2026/africas-… #IamAPHRC #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch

Every child deserves to learn in a safe and supportive environment. But for too many, school is where violence begins. In this article, #IamAPHRC’s Mchungwani Rashid, @LucyWakiaga , Alvin Kimani, @williamsila , and @ndonyesarah break down the persistent challenge of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) in Kenya, highlighting the gap between strong policies and their implementation. “...𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅, 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒗𝒐𝒓-𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒎𝒔, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍-𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒌 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒕 …” Creating safer schools requires more than policies; it demands sustained commitment, investment, and action. African countries must de-center muzungu in their tourism strategies. Why does every African country sell wildlife that the residents have no connection to, "exotic" experiences, and prioritize the comfort of short-term visitors over their citizens'?

Unpopular opinion: To attract tourists, make your cities and country LIVABLE for the residents. Put up attractions for the residents primarily and improve their living standards. Then advertise those to tourists. The "Foreign Gaze" in African tourism needs to die!

Across Kenya, alcohol companies support schools, health programs, sports, and community initiatives through corporate social responsibility (CSR). But what happens when these initiatives also shape public perception, policy conversations, and alcohol control efforts? In this blog, Maurine Ng'oda, @Hope_Shete , and @WilundaCalistus examine the complex intersection between alcohol industry CSR and public health, exploring whether these initiatives primarily serve communities or corporate interests and what this means for alcohol policy in Kenya. 📖 Read the full blog: aphrc.org/giving-back-or-tak… #IamAPHRC #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch @amveyange @CKyobutungi @DMdiarafa @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah @DorcasOdhiambo @FlorahKarimi @Waithaka_KE @Chris_Maero @ChristineGer22 @MangwanaVJ @Hope_shete @Wekesah @CharityWaweru @Waithaka_KE @isabelmutuku1 @Liz_Kimani @FlorahKarimi @cwkabiru @agnes_kiragga @njerimbuthia @lamechmutava
