Hardware is also the interface to the physical world; with it we can build software that no one else without similar access can even build.
Hardware is the moat that buys you time to build the software castle.

Kudos to the VC that messaged at 2.30a to cancel our morning meeting at Slush due to "very active due diligence" which I have to presume was in-person. #Slush2024

Steve was one of the good ones. He covered the @MinutHQ Series A and was one of few journalists who took the time to understand how we protect privacy from the early days. 🙏🏻

The Trustpilot weighted average algorithm really is beautiful to behold. Would love to see the maths behind this!

Trustpilot has become a protection racket. Compare two companies: One with two-thirds 1 star reviews One with two-thirds 5 star reviews The weighted "algorithm" awards the company with mostly 1 star reviews a higher score. The difference—they're paying their protection money.

This essay is accurate. The most common advice from non-founders whenever you encounter a scaling issue is to add another layer of management. It seldom works in my experience.

There's a lot of wisdom here, and some of it completely counter to how you would launch an app company. One thing I would add (having made the mistake with @MinutHQ) is to build a service from the start. Only customers willing to pay on a recurring basis should be your focus.
It’s hard to understate the difficulty of the v1 launch of a consumer hardware co. It’s also amplified when they have raised a lot of capital because their sales expectations are unattainable. I see a ton of new HW startups coming out. A few counterintuitive recommendations…🧵

SOSV was first to fund @MinutHQ and have supported us tirelessly since. It's great to see the mission continue and new founders getting to shoot their shot! 🚀

It's becoming increasingly hard to know what's real.
Introducing Sora, our text-to-video model. Sora can create videos of up to 60 seconds featuring highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters with vibrant emotions. openai.com/sora Prompt: “Beautiful, snowy Tokyo city is bustling. The camera moves through the bustling city street, following several people enjoying the beautiful snowy weather and shopping at nearby stalls. Gorgeous sakura petals are flying through the wind along with snowflakes.”

I believe Churchill once prophesied that great powers go to war when they believe they might be weaker in the future.
For 1st time in almost 30 years, China’s GDP in $ fell in 2023 to about $17.5trn, while U.S. gdp rise 6% to about $27trn. The gap widened by about $2trn. And China’s share of world GDP slipped to just under 17%. How meaningful is this? 1/4

Many of the components we buy has gone from 6+ month lead-time to now being available within a few weeks. It could be that supply has finally caught up, but considering how quickly it changed it seems to me like a big drop in demand.

This is a beautiful essay on Jerusalem, focusing not on the recent violence but on how the city has been changing since it's Ottoman past: unherd.com/2023/12/jerusalem… by @b_judah

Pricing is hard. A story in three reviews: It works. It’s simple and affordable. Keep up the great work and product. Can you explain to me the exorbitant [...] increase in the price of subscription from €149 to €180? It saved our Airbnb from burning down. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There are too few hardware startups in this world so it’s amazing to see @imranchaudhri and team going to the distance with this concept!

When your personal AI can see what you see it has potential to reach a whole new level of utility compared to blind voice assistants. I personally prefer the Humane pin form factor factor to having something covering your face in daily life and hope it’s successful!

One question is whether a pin gets in the way of social interaction like the Narrative Clip did. People want ephemeral conversations. There’s more friction to using visual AI through the lens of your phone, but better discoverability and privacy. Hopefully both can work. 🙏🏻
