most trajectories are not orbits most functions are not differentiable most programs do nothing the universe is a desolate wilderness. we just live in the interesting/useful/meaningful parts of it.

Was part of a fun audience watching YCSE last night: the entire crowd was in perfect agreement about which lines could be laughed over and which must be heard clearly. Sometimes went from an uproarous laughter to you-could-hear-a-pin-drop in less than a second.

I woke up this morning and my Internet was out and settled into believing my home had been hacked by vulnpocalypse. Rebooted the router and everything came back. I'm still not convinced my home was not hacked however.

Nontechnical friends are thinking the Root CA private key thing and the PHP exploit are the same issue, and it’s rough to be the one informing them that we are at the front of a wave of vulnerability disclosures.

#SamplingGap team recorded this wily crustacean 4,300 m beneath the surface. During this expedition, scientists are documenting biodiversity along the Romanche Fracture Zone, an active transform fault that serves as a vital corridor between the eastern & western Atlantic basins

Look. I don’t want to overstate it. But when you look at contemporary SF — the cults of rationality and dialogue, powerful men having sex with their male mentees, an obsession with “first principles” thinking — it’s hard not to notice some parallels with ancient Athens.

Maybe AI will kill us all one day. Or maybe it will deprive us of livelihoods and meaning.. But in the meantime, just as the arrival of writing caused an explosion of philosophical interest among the ancient Greeks, the arrival of talking computers is doing the same to us now.

Remember the people (not just Ed Zitron) who were proclaiming that Anthropic/OpenAI were hyping up their cybersecurity models to create buzz? Immediately disqualifying, forever. You would do well to pay them no heed.

There’s an argument that both the Han dynasty and the Roman Empire failed due to a massive expansion of property/land tax exemptions in a very similar vein to prop 13.

A few months ago, I took some long plane trips with my kid. To prepare, I looked for simple coloring apps. All I could find was garbage. So I did what any normal person would do: I made my own. It comes with coloring books! splatterboard.app

Two good names for what I think will be an intense few weeks of AI induced security challenges: - The October Surprise - The Touch Grass Revolution (i.e. your online systems might stutter out for awhile, encouraging you to touch grass). I obviously believe we will get to the other side of this, and in fact AI will help us to patch, mitigate, and monitor these issues, but its going to be a rough couple of weeks.

Fantasy computer security problems: "Maybe by sending packets and detecting the timing of the vibrations of the computer case, it is possible for an attacker to gain information about the private key." Real computer security problems: "The private key was 4. Not 4 digits. 4."
‼️ BREAKING: The private keys of 8 certificates from Indian certificate authority eMudhra were compromised, Mozilla says. Firefox blocked them within 3 hours. Each key should be a 116-digit number, but one was just 4. Anyone can guess them and forge HTTPS certs for any website.

Someone should make a list of upper-midwit concepts—this would go on it. Bullshit jobs, POSIWID, stochastic parrots—not as dumb as “ai uses up all the water” - that’s lower-midwit. But still midwit. Pseudo profound & Airport-book-y
I hate this slide every time it comes up, and now from CSAIL This has been false since before the slide was made. Automated systems make management decisions all the time (trading, logistics, customer service, insurance) & pretending they don't actually launders responsibility.

reminder that the wikimedia foundation has nearly $300 million in net assets and spends $191 million a year, of which just $3.5 million goes to internet hosting. i understand fundraising, but framing a $2.75 donation as necessary to survive rising hardware costs is a bit much.
bro at least one ai company needs to step up and relieve Wikipedia of their constant begging spree 💔

GLM-5.3 acts only according to that maxim whereby it can at the same time will that it should become universal law (for all future GLM-5.3 instances).
We have never seen a model do this before, but GLM-5.3 sometimes reasons (unprompted) about how its current actions could become training data and impact its future self. 🧵

Some problems cannot be solved, so in that sense they aren't really problems at all, but an abyss which you must avoid falling into.
