~ a (potentially ongoing) list of films to watch in anticip-p-pation of 1 week to go until the release of the vampire lestat: both likely & confirmed cinematic influences as well as a wider exploration of similarities in theme and style ~ 🧵
increasingly frustrated & negative feelings surrounding this place & its way of ‘discussing’ the vampire show, hence taking a break, may (or may not) return in a few weeks 💔
when i call out your name: now we’re talking ‼️‼️‼️straight out of early 90s 2nd wave goth: rosetta stone, icon & the black roses, type o negative, and later, h.i.m., zola jesus & chelsea wolfe - lush, dark, & romantic; eric draven, this one goes out to you 🖤
‘blue eyes, blue eyes’ is sung like a patrick cassidy-esque invocation to the gods, the curdling screams of ‘ga-ga-ga-ga’ like a hand bursting through the damp earth. the repetition of the chorus sung in that anguished tone up an octave is just so, so spine-tingling good

cabbage: this one feels like a prelude to tvl the musical co-written by mcr & patd ft brandon flowers. i kept waiting for the main hook to appear but it never came, the chords never return to the home key, always -
- in-show performance to situate it; i’m not sure how well it works on its own. it seems truly bizarre that we don’t see lestat performing this in the show, aside from 3 sec of the intro. sam’s incredible monologue skills mid-song alone merited a corresponding sequence in the -
‘character x would never say - ’ at what point do you think it will sink in that iwtvl is not a documentary & that these are not real ppl & that they *would* in fact say that bc they are being written to say that by a team of writers who have been expertly & consistently laying -
- the groundwork of their characterisation since the beginning but you were ignoring them because you were too busy playing at fandom activism to pay attention or care
it evokes prufrock & his melancholy, paralysing phrase ‘there will be time’, a record skipping over the same anxious groove of indecision, vs marvell’s ‘had we but world enough & time’, a call to action while prufrock leans on the notion of infinity to justify never acting at all
i love the repeated refrain of ‘again’ in 3,05, not simply as the mantra of the self-punishing artist, throwing himself closer & closer to the edge with every iteration in the never-ending pursuit of perfection, but also how it exemplifies the cyclical tragedy of being a vampire,
realising that i may be the only person left on earth who actually wants to experience episodes of television in realtime and as unspoiled as possible 🙃
