Congratulations Dr Cyriac Abby Philips (The Liver Doctor). You deserve this and more. And healthcare in India needs more science communicators and clinicians and clear-sighted advocates of science-based & evidence-based medicine like you.
My dear friends, something important.
I am deeply honored to share that I am one of the eight finalists globally shortlisted for the 2026 John Maddox Prize.
Established in 2012 in memory of Sir John Maddox (the legendary former editor of Nature and Fellow of the Royal Society), this global prize, spearheaded by Sense about Science and supported by the Royal Society. It was previously co-awarded by Nature. And honors individuals who stand up for sound science and evidence in the public interest, advancing critical discussions despite facing hostility, powerful vested interests, and severe obstacles.
For me, an India-based science communicator and clinician, this recognition carries immense weight. This is the very first time a resident from the Indian Subcontinent has been shortlisted for the Maddox Prize.
Speaking truth to power against pseudoscience, predatory health misinformation, and unscientific traditional remedies in a cultural and political ecosystem that heavily endorse them, comes at a steep personal, legal, and professional cost.
To stand alongside seven extraordinary global finalists—from public health researchers working under fire in Gaza, to scientists defending rigorous evidence in the UK, France, Bolivia, Mexico, New Zealand, and the US—is deeply humbling for me.
I may or may not win. But with this shortlist, India’s advocacy for evidence-based medicine has a place on this global stage. Our patients, our public conversations and our struggles to defend scientific integrity matter beyond our borders.
I hope this encourages more doctors and researchers across India, the wider subcontinent and West Asia to speak openly, engage the public and stand by sound evidence.
Whatever the result, the work continues.
Jai Hind.

Three very simple but vitally important questions:
Here are three very simple and straightforward questions to the Union Home Minister, who has been defending SIR:
1. How many घुसपैठिए were detected?
2. How many घुसपैठिए were deleted?
3. How many घुसपैठिए were deported?
100 crore Indians have been put through the SIR process. They deserve to know the results.
The fact is that the घुसपैठिया argument is given repeatedly by the architect of the Shah Instigated Removal (SIR) to divert attention from the reality of nearly 14 crore Indians being stripped of their constitutional right to vote by the Desperate Duo.
Is he suggesting that these 14 crore Indians are घुसपैठिए? As HM, has he overseen this massive rise in घुसपैठियों?

When you’re in panic mode, everything you do tends to go wrong! Delhi Police have denotified (forbidden) Jantar Mantar as a protest area, which is a violation of the Supreme Court’s order.
But that’s not my point. The government should have thought of some creative idea. Imagine if Jantar Mantar was renamed “Narendra Modi Square” — most of the protesters would have looked the other way. In any case, Modi has become an exception as he names airports or stadiums after himself right after inaugurating them!

Dr Vanya Vaidehi Bhargav, an intellectual historian at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru (NLSIU), offers some timely counsel to Congress leaders, supporters, and others who seem to have bought into conspiracy theories about the Cockroach Janata Party and the mass protests it has spearheaded under one banner on vital democratic issues:
“Why Congress must not smear CJP
The CJP provided a common platform for a diverse coalition of dissenters to coalesce, and express dissent in personalised, creative ways under one banner”

Prannoy Roy offers a basic lesson in election analysis to the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer and others who questioned DeKoder’s SIR analysis. Don’t miss this:
After the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer and a BJP spokesperson questioned DeKoder's earlier SIR analysis, Prannoy Roy (@PrannoyRoy7749) responds with a closer look at the data.
Is counting seats won enough to understand SIR's electoral impact? What does the vote swing reveal that the seat tally doesn't?
Watch till the end and follow DeKoder for more.

Muslims disproportionately flagged in Delhi SIR
Muslims, who form 13.6% of electors on Delhi’s draft roll, made up 20.3% of those flagged for ‘logical discrepancies’ and 30% of those flagged under five reasons indicative of family size by the Election Commission’s ERONET software.
The Hindu digitised Delhi’s draft SIR rolls, which had 97.54 lakh voters, of whom 33.12 lakh were flagged for notices by the ECI, to study patterns. The latter set included two distinct sets of electors: 13.79 lakh were flagged for being “Unmapped with Last SIR” and another 19.33 lakh for “logical discrepancies” based on eight reasons.

“Over 20 journalists recount the Delhi Police’s use of brute force against them: At the anti-SIR protests, the Delhi Police’s playbook appears to have one rule that prevails above all else — detain journalists, no matter what ID they carry. An October 11 Supreme Court order against this did little to deter the personnel on ground” — The News Minute: thenewsminute.com/news/over-…
