NVIDIA’s latest Game Ready Driver 616.56 has CONFIRMED display-flickering problems with some monitors running in 8-bit color. • Driver 616.56 released August 26 • Users report random black, white and color flickering after installing it • Reports indicate the problem primarily occurs when displays are running at 8 bpc / 8-bit color • Switching the display to 10-bit color reportedly stops the flickering immediately in affected configurations • Enabling Windows Auto Color Management (ACM) has also reportedly stopped it in testing • NVIDIA staff has acknowledged the issue and says a fix is being tested • If your monitor supports 10-bit, go to NVIDIA App ➡️ System ➡️ Monitors ➡️ Color Depth ➡️ 10-bit • Windows Advanced Display Settings can be used afterward to verify that 10-bit is actually active • If 10-bit isn’t available, lowering the refresh rate (I know which sucks) may expose the option, depending on the monitor/bandwidth configuration • or just rolling back from 616.56 to 610.88 has resolved the problem for multiple users. • There are also separate reports of blank displays/display-output problems with 616.56, although those shouldn’t automatically be assumed to have the same 8-bit root cause. For anyone experiencing flickering, switching to 10-bit is the easiest workaround. If the monitor can’t do 10-bit, rolling back to 610.88 is the safer option until NVIDIA releases a hotfix.
