Atwine orders stricter Ebola screening at DRC border crossings Health ministry permanent secretary Dr Diana Atwine criticised immigration officers at the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha border, accusing some of allowing Congolese nationals into Uganda without adequate checks. Atwine warned that officials found facilitating unauthorised crossings risk arrest and dismissal. She urged the public, particularly residents of border communities, to remain vigilant, saying Uganda remained at risk because of its proximity to the outbreak and the movement of people across the border. observer.ug/news/atwine-orde…

PS Atwine clashes with Health minister boss Kawooya over ‘pocketing’ doctor In a viral social media video, Kawooya is seen confronting Dr Robert Candia of Arua Regional Referral Hospital for allegedly disrespecting her by addressing her while keeping his hands in his pockets during an official engagement at the hospital. The minister, accompanied by other officials, questions the doctor over his conduct before declaring, “For you, it’s suspension. I have said suspension …” But in a statement issued on Friday, Atwine said the government has established procedures for handling disciplinary matters within the public service, emphasising that any action against a public officer must comply with the applicable administrative requirements. observer.ug/news/ps-atwine-c…

Is Yusuf Serunkuma’s pro-Muhoozi transition stance intellectual fidelity or cowardice? Yusuf has spent years building much of his intellectual legitimacy by criticising Museveni and, at different moments, Muhoozi. Yet he is now helping normalise the idea that Muhoozi should be Uganda’s next president. Intellectuals do not merely analyse political possibilities. They shape what society begins to regard as possible, reasonable and acceptable. Buy Maps They have preference-shaping power. Someone who is sceptical of Muhoozi may begin to reconsider simply because they trust Yusuf’s judgement. Repetition across Yusuf’s many political talk shows, podcasts and other public forums can gradually turn a previously unacceptable possibility into something people begin to regard as inevitable. And then there is the defence that Yusuf is simply following the evidence. observer.ug/viewpoint/is-yus…
