Baby girl (aka Little One) has arrived! What started with a routine appointment led us to rush to the hospital for me to be induced and eventually deliver, but she’s here and is perfect. My friends and family were asked to send prayers for her, I’d love that from you too.

NEW: Last school year, a 7th grader viewed 4,700 YouTube videos during class.
An 8th grader viewed 5,700 videos in class.
A 2nd grader viewed ~500 in just 2 months.
Less than 5% were educational.
@nbcnews analyzed the YouTube watch histories of students from across the country. My new story shows how far some take it on their school laptops and iPads -->

This is a real problem. Responsibility has shifted from being put on students and families to teachers. They carry so much.
A colleague who was a teacher for 30 years once told me something I have never forgotten: "Back when I started teaching, if a student got a bad grade, the parents/school would say to the student 'why didn't you work hard enough?' Today however, when a kid gets a bad grade, the parents/school now say that same thing to the teacher."

As long as I live, I will never, ever get over how losing twenty 6- and 7-year-old children days before Christmas wasn’t the end of guns in this country.
We rather spontaneously converted our daughter’s bed from the crib to a toddler bed. Please send any tips and tricks for how to help the transition go smoothly. I just got a night light that changes from red to green when she is allowed to get out of bed.
IMHO schools in states that depend on ADA funding (Average Daily Attendance, this includes California) have absolutely no business pressuring families to attend school. Every one of their reasons is clouded by their need to have students in seats every day in order to get funds.
New lesson learned: a handheld bottle does not hold enough water for a 13 mile run on a 90 degree day. Ask me how I know.

We got a smoker/grill. Send us your favorite recipes and tips, especially for anyone on low sodium diets, and for any plant-based/veggie options as well…. Can that even be done? Can you put veggies in a smoker?

I think one of the biggest issues facing public education right now is that most of the employees are not satisfied in their jobs. It’s really challenging to run a successful organization with that many unhappy people. And at the end of the day, the students lose out. Start by addressing this and things might possibly get better. But any other efforts will fall short if the staff are unhappy.
I had a deloading week and ran 7 miles for my long run today… While I enjoyed the run and considered it easy, I had to stop and give myself credit for building up mileage again, and for how long I’ve come in the past few years.
The transition from being called Mama to being called “Mom” has begun, and I don’t like it. 🥺
