American Mary (2012) dir. Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska 4/5 October Spookfest 25 of 31 Body horror. Body glamour. This could be an awful exploitative movie, but it keeps most of the worst off the screen, focuses on story, and has comedy too.

Hey @JohnHealey_MP if you want a really easy fix in your budget, do this: Pension = tax allowance = 1000 hours minimum wage. Currently they're not far off this. £12,547.60: £12,570: £12,710 Equalise them. Fix them all to some measure to rise each year. It will be popular.

Kicking off the 2026 movie thread of pithy reviews of every film I watch this year.

The Hitcher (1986) dir. Robert Harmon 4/5 Superficially a human horror story, but Rutger Hauer is an archetype, following nightmare rules of place, time and action, C. Thomas Howell the victim, running but never getting away. It has rightly become an absolute classic.

I only did a MSc in Management, thought the equivalent MBA was a bit ego driven rather than organisational, so maybe I missed the part where management schools explain most problems in management are due to the surprising amount of sociopaths you have to deal with.

Yes, I am never not slightly shocked at how little so many people actually care about others despite committing to many nice sounding policies and statements. Also, the people who demand things quicker or better without committing any resources.

Alright, I'll bite. You're suggesting the company cannot increase prices because they're already at the highest demand would allow. Let's park that nonsense for a moment..., ...meanwhile, if it were true, what other effects could it possibly have on, I don't know, employment, wages, costs and quality of production etc. etc. if you tax away profits.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply. Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply. Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents. dadun.unav.edu/server/api/cor… ecb.europa.eu/pub/pdf/scpwps… taxfoundation.org/blog/big-oil-p… scottishfinancialreview.com/2025/09/03/win…

For 2036? I reckon it will go to India. This is misuse of public funds for electioneering.
BREAKING: Ahead of the budget this week, the Prime Minister has announced plans to bring the Olympics and Paralympics back to the UK with a £7m fund

I know my usage is already down an awful lot in a little over a day. This site knows its down as my notifications is already starting to fill with 'recent posts' from people I follow to try to grab me back in.

I should think the best way for young kids to learn consent is to be grossed out by a spit-tissue wipe or unwanted hug from your Nan.
The number of grown adults who think that children shouldn’t be allowed to say no to a hug is incredibly concerning

It definitely helps the figures if up to a quarter of a million victims of grooming gangs are dismissed in order to not upset community relations. That’s for sure.
Some chatter on social media would have you believe that crime is out of control. The facts tell a different story. As @frasernelson has shown in his Substack today: Violence is at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981. Robbery is at a record low. Crime, excluding fraud, is 78% down on its peak in 1995. And the stats show this Government is delivering on its promises too: Knife crime is down 11%. Knife murders are at their lowest level in 35 years. Thefts including phone snatching have fallen by 20% in the last year alone. But I know there is more that we must do, and we will: We’ve put more than 3,800 extra neighbourhood officers into roles, with named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood. We’re introducing the most significant reforms to policing in a generation. We are tackling rising rates of violence against women and girls through our landmark strategy. And we are tackling crimes like fraud, more prevalent in our increasingly online world, with £250 million directed to this challenge in our Fraud Strategy published this year.

We are not on any major tectonic faults, rarely have extreme weather, mild, temperate, an island with little chance of physical invasion. So just how incredibly badly has our energy and food security been messed up that this is a normal speech? Mental.
💥 NEW: Prepare for food shortages and disruption, Wes Streeting warns, on day one of three year campaign to make the public more resilient. Britons should have enough food, water, cash and medical supplies to last three days. Make a "grab bag" in case you have to leave home and keep essentials in the car boot. If you have a baby, make sure you have enough baby formula and nappies. Dan Jarvis, the security minister, says: "Those who can flow this advice should" thetimes.com/article/5971929…

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but php being a really sloppy language that millions of developers have used to churn out crappy code over the years may be a portent of the AI vibe code tsunami that is currently being created.

Trigger finger nonces are the weirdest.
This photo is a perfect encapsulation of everything wrong with modern policing standards. A woman who cannot even grasp the single most basic rule of firearm safety, keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot, is being publicly celebrated and armed by the Metropolitan Police. Her index finger is squarely on the trigger of a rifle while she smiles for a promotional photo under a banner that reads “Women in Firearms Attachment.” This is not a minor slip. It is the kind of catastrophic negligence that gets people killed. And the fact that a sergeant is standing right next to her, grinning, while this happens tells you everything about the quality of instruction and supervision in that unit. @metpoliceuk if this is the standard your firearms officers are held to, you have no business putting anyone in possession of a weapon. Retrain your instructors, or better yet, stop pretending this is competence. #firearms #incompetence #safety

Because he has done nothing. Which is fine. Three more years of doing nothing will be better than anything they want to do.
Burnham is, by far and away, the most popular politician in the country. Something you’d have no idea about if you only consumed political news on X. The reality distortion field is as effective as ever!
