Skiing Birchlegs Crossing the Mountain with the Royal Child - Knud Bergslien, 1869
In the early 1200s Norway was in a state of civil war with the Birkebeiner (Birchleg) and Bagler factions vying for power. In 1204, King Haakon who belonged to the Birchleg faction died, seemingly without an heir.
However a woman, Inga of Varteig, claimed to have had a son by him. She lived in Bagler territory though, so the Birchlegs sent warriors to transport him to safety in a famous scene from Norwegian history. The boy later became King Haakon IV.
