ok my basic understanding is that the term “borderer”is a bit like if you referred to an israeli who moved to new york as “polish”
very funny to me that farmers love to complain about how deeply unprofitable their business is and then never ever under any circumstances sell it and do anything else with their lives
Walker: "I nearly bought a wool jumper in town. £140. Nice work if you can get it."
Farmer: "I got about £2 for the fleece."
Walker: "£2?"
Farmer: "Per sheep, per year. Clipped it off her in two minutes, rolled it, bagged it, drove it to the depot. The cheque for the whole flock didn't cover the diesel."
Walker: "Then who's getting the £140?"
Farmer: "Not me, not the shearer. He costs me more per sheep than the wool fetches. I pay to have it taken off."
Walker: "So you lose money shearing."
Farmer: "Every year. And I can't not shear, or she cooks in July and the flies eat her alive. The wool's a welfare job that used to be an income."
Walker: "Sell it yourself, then. Cut out the middleman."
Farmer: "Not allowed. By law it goes through the board. Has done since 1950. I can keep a fleece for the wife to knit with, and that's about the extent of my freedom."
Walker: "So where does it go?"
Farmer: "Washed in Bradford, if we're lucky. Shipped to China, spun, knitted, shipped back, and sold to you with a label about heritage. By the time it's in the window there are eleven people between us and I'm the only one who met the sheep."
Walker: "That's mad."
Farmer: "My grandfather paid the rent on the wool cheque. I pay a man to take it away. Same sheep, same hill, same jumper in the window. Only the price of the farmer went down."
Walker: "What would fix it?"
Farmer: "You buying the jumper. And asking them where the other £138 went."
a lot of blue collar work i look at and think “hmm yeah looks tough but i could probably do it” or “ah that’s not so bad” but this is like a stress dream i’d have i’m getting anxious just watching it
kind of interesting that, from a cursory google, the term “borderers” basically doesn’t exist? I feel like i see it kicking around twitter a lot but it seems like a fairly niche phrase for what are more commonly called ulster scots
of course culturally the irish and the scots share a lot, so when an american folk musician describes appalachian folk as inspired by irish folk music, he’s probably 1) partly correct and 2) only mildly incorrect (scots folk being a close cousin of irish)
the finnish word for night is so funny
extremely common word, immediate stumbling block for learners
you can just ask claude or astra to do this btw
you can even ask it for specific types of cuisine, shopping lists, nutritional preferences or targets, to plan for once or twice weekly bulk cooking to reduce nightly work

now watching dead snow, a very funny movie in which a bunch of swedish mid-30 year olds act like teenagers
return of the living dead is a very funny movie
one highlight is a girl so turned on by death that simply being in a graveyard drives her to strip, and then one of her friends going “oh is X naked again?”
