I'm so happy to share these new images of the black hole in M87 today! They reveal how the radio waves from near the black hole's event horizon look in polarized light -- they us that the magnetic fields just outside the black hole are strong and push back on infalling gas.
This is the most intimate portrait yet of a black hole, according to an international team of radio astronomers. The image of Messier 87, a black hole 6.5 billion times as massive as the sun, shows, for the first time, how it looks in polarized light. nyti.ms/3tQtd2H
