Mission not impossible! Living in a lockdown. Steel yourself for weeks of uncertainty and stress of the unknown. But from those of us who have been coping with the threat of the #coronavirus since January, please know this: It gets better. A few thoughts: cnbc.com/2020/03/19/coronavi…
#iPhoneDuo is in #China! At @Apple store in shopping area of Sanlitun in Beijing. Doors open at 8am. So far about 100 people in line. First person said she has been waiting for 2 hours and paid official price of ~$3,100 (CNY21k). Scalpers are offering customers $450 for their Duo’s with plans to sell in black market at $600 mark-up. $AAPL

1/ President Trump’s decision to go to Andrews Air Base to roll out the red carpet for China’s President Xi Jinping when his plane lands there this afternoon is literally unprecedented. Never before has an American president gone to the airport to meet a Chinese leader visiting Washington.
Xi Jinping will stay at the Waldorf Astoria - former Trump hotel - in Washington. On his last visit in 2015, he stayed at Blair House, the official US guest house across from the White House. Maybe he heard Hu Jintao could not get to sleep there years ago because of the noise!
I suspect @dennisw5 can provide some color on that 😉

I've listened to Terry Gross on @nprfreshair for years. So I was truly grateful to have the opportunity to join her for a forty-five minute discussion on China policy.
We covered the Trump-Xi summit, cybersecurity, AI, Taiwan, and more.

Great thread on why a grand bargain on Taiwan is unlikely. I think Xi will stress the importance of preserving US-China "constructive strategic stability" and warn that selling arms to Taiwan would undermine the leaders' consensus. He probably won't raise the '82 Communique or propose a 4th communique.
Xi and Trump agreed to a one-year trade truce at a meeting in South Korea last October. The deal, which was set to expire in November, will now be extended to Jan. 10, Bessent said. He added that Beijing needs to fulfill more deliverables.
Chinese state media did not immediately note Bessent’s comments on the trade truce.

“Trump may laud Xi as a respected friend, as he did when the two men met in Beijing in May. Yet Xi is no friend of Trump’s. Throughout his 14 years in power, #China’s president has acted deliberately and consistently to undermine the United States. His two-day trip to Washington now seems perfectly timed to exploit the weakness of his host and main strategic rival,” @MichaelSchuman writes in @TheAtlantic. theatlantic.com/internationa…

A true US-China detente would be wonderful, but the Q that @jessicacweiss & others seeking detente have to answer is: How much are they willing to sacrifice for this goal & what conditions would they place on China? Should the US accept run-away Chinese industrial policy, stepped up military pressure vs its neighbors, expanded cyber operations, & other dangerous behavior? Yes, the US needs to signal restraint, a willingness to co-exist & a commitment to int'l norms, but what are China's obligations?

China on Wednesday warned of “back-door” security risks affecting companies that use U.S.-based company Anthropic’s Claude Code artificial intelligence tool.
It comes as the U.S.-China tech race intensifies, with Anthropic last month blaming Chinese company Alibaba for attempting to extract its AI capabilities, which are not officially available in China. Alibaba did not comment on the accusations at the time.

When I taught at the Beijing Center for Chinese Studies, I would take my students to visit Pastor Jin—he was a moderate, sensible voice. His release is great news, but we need all prisoners of conscience to be released, including #dongyuyu.
We celebrate the release of Pastor #EzraJin and his reunification with his family in the United States.
We thank @POTUS for raising Pastor Jin’s case directly with #XiJinping and for making sure US diplomats worked behind the scenes to make this release happen. @SecRubio @USAmbChina
